I'm confused about honeymoons...

Okay, dumb question... A little background: When I went to a bridal show a few months ago, I "won" a free travel consultation with a travel agent. I put quotes around that because it's total BS. Anyone could have a travel agent consultation... but anyway, this woman made me write down what we were...

A little background: When I went to a bridal show a few months ago, I "won" a free travel consultation with a travel agent. I put quotes around that because it's total BS. Anyone could have a travel agent consultation... but anyway, this woman made me write down what we were thinking about doing for a honeymoon and schedule a consultation.

Okay, so she just emailed me. And she said she was reaching out about my interest in a Peru honeymoon and sent me an itinerary from a cookie cutter tour website. This is the 2nd travel agent (one that I used in the past for a different trip) that did this. I feel like that's not really the point of the travel agent. I could just book straight from the tour website if that's what I wanted. I kind of wanted to build something around what FH and I want to see/do.

Am I wrong for thinking that that's how travel agents work? Are they just booking you tours/packages that are already in place from other sites?

To play devils advocate here, are you just using any old travel agent, or an affiliated agency? I work at a luxury hotel, and while I personally don't use agents, sooooo many of our guests do. The ones to look for are Virtuoso affiliated agencies. They generally get their guests comp upgrades and dining credits as a standard, and beciase of relationships guest generally get better service and welcome amenities too. They also make their money off of commission from the hotel not from you, and we don't upcharge their rates because of the affiliation. Can't say how all hotels are, but that's us. While I definitely don't think a TA is necessary, I can research things myself, I'd probably talk to one if I was going somewhere totally new just because of the industry I'm in. I don't know shit about Peru, but maybe they do, I can hear what they have to say and make my own opinions from there. Where are you located, jersey I'm guessing? I'll ask our northeast sales manager for a good agency around you. As far as activities, that's not usually their forte. They'll know some, but the agents mostly call the concierge at the hotels for more personalized recommendations.

@Ahhh, LizzyS, that's so interesting! I've never heard of Virtuoso affiliated agencies. I will definitely look into it. That's what part of me was hoping for since it was a honeymoon, that I would get perks for the fact that it's my honeymoon, but I was starting to think that was just in the movies Smiley smile And yes, I'm in northern NJ. If you hear from your northeast sales manager about a great agency near me, that would be very helpful. I just sent you a connection request Smiley smile

I do destination wedding planning in the Lake Tahoe/Placerville/Sacramento area (Northern California).

A person who is a travel agent contacted me to see if I'd like to do so as well, and would I spend an hour listening to her presentation? I thought, this could be another service I could offer my couples.

It was a cookie cutter website with my name put on it, and I got a commission for every resort/cruise I booked. I chose not to do it because I'm all about helping couples have a small, intimate affordable wedding, and so the cruise/resort booking did not work for my business (plus I like authenticity and experiential adventure travel, not cruising and resorts, personally).

They do encourage their agents to go on trips themselves to experience it firsthand, so that could be a plus if you get someone who knows the resort you want to go to.

Oh, wow! I always thought a travel agent was supposed to help you book what you wanted to do, or, if you didn't know what you wanted, to help you plan something based on where you're going!
