I'm So Flustered And Confused!!! *rant* 😭😭

We met with our officiant today (a friend of mine who's done it before and is also a notary) and we are not happy. She told us that in order for her to legalize the day of our wedding, she needs to send in her application to do so 30 days prior. We are about 2 weeks out. We told her BACK IN MARCH...
We met with our officiant today (a friend of mine who's done it before and is also a notary) and we are not happy. She told us that in order for her to legalize the day of our wedding, she needs to send in her application to do so 30 days prior. We are about 2 weeks out. We told her BACK IN MARCH that we were getting married in August and even confirmed in June that she will still be doing it!


According to her she's been battling multiple departments trying to figure out who she was even supposed to be talking to. If you've done it before, you shouldn't have had an issue. Am I wrong or am I missing something?? We're not even sure when she actually started trying to contact anyone but she says she was finally able to reach the correct people almost 2 months ago. They just responded to her earlier this week.
She can still perform the day of but we're literally forced to get married this Thursday, PRIOR to our actual wedding date. It really hurts that we've been pinned against the wall like this. We absolutely refused to postpone again since our guests already made travel arrangements. I just wish I could wake up from this.

    It's ok! I appreciate the search and solid answer. I knew something was off but of course in the heat of the moment, I couldn't think straight to ask questions or anything. Definitely taking time today to look for someone else and hope they're available.

    I absolutely agree I never heard of this. We have a friend who is officiating our wedding as well and he has married many people before. And he never had to do this. I'd definitely research this and talk to someone about this

    Yea that's definitely where she got me confused but I never questioned it beforehand because it wasn't brought up before. She just offered to do it cause she said she could. If I knew this was going to happen, we would have went with someone else a long time ago. Now that I'm more clear headed, I'm reaching out to professionals today. Thank you!

    I wish you luck! We found our officiant through WeddingWire. It did take a little bit to find one that was available, but he worked out get. Let us know if you are able to find someone Smiley smile

    I would go with someone else.


    Sis, try the thumbtack app ASAP. That’s where I found mine last minute and she was amazing.
    It doesn’t sound like she’s sure about what she’s doing.

    Not at all and I seriously hate that I trusted her. She never gave me a reason to doubt her until that meeting and I'm like what?? I actually got a couple responses already from officiants through weddingwire so I'll see what's up with them.

    Thank you. It turned out she tried to play me in thinking she was ordained or whatever, hence why she had the application cause she had to take a course also. We hired a licensed officiant yesterday and back on track!

    Thank you! Like heat of the moment I had my meltdown and everything. Even called my mom. Once I composed myself and seeing the comments on here, I'm like yea, I definitely need to look up some stuff cause getting married before the wedding was not our plan. Good things from now on. Things are starting to fall into place slowly and very fast at the same time lol.

    I dug a little more, because this intrigued me.

    Interestingly, in Nevada, even ministers and other religious officials are required to obtain authorization from the County Clerk to officially perform the marriage (unless they have that five-year license).

    So even just being ordained isn't sufficient. You need the five-year license or authorization for a single day.

    Notaries Public are allowed to perform marriage ceremonies in your state (TIL there actually are only four states in which this is allowed!) but they still require authorization. Perhaps she didn't realize the second part, and just assumed the legal ability was all she needed. Unfortunately, that caused you quite a great deal of stress.

    Happy to see you found an officiant, though, and all will be well!
