In place of floating candles...?

Nicole S. (formerly Nicole C), on March 15, 2012 at 8:40 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

I love how the centerpiece vases look with the flowers submerged in water and the floating candles on top- problem is my venue doesn't allow candles! Does anyone have any suggestions for something that I could use in place?

Not 100% sold on the idea but I'd like to see if I have something to work with other than candles...

No suggestions on what you can use in its place, but submerged flowers look nice too without floating candles. Take a look at this pin from my Pinterest page.

We are having candles , and we are doing this also. Its alstromeria (sp) with hydrated water beads. when they are fully hydrated they were floating and blocking the flower so I inserted a smaller flat glass votive holder to hold them down, and it actually gave a place for the flower stem to rest.

You could put colored beads in the bottom of the vase with a floralyte hidden inside them, then do the submerged flower - the light will shine from below and they look beautiful. Here is a pic that shows how they cast light r

Submersible light in the rocks, or if budget allows - lighting companies can do "pin spotting" on the centerpieces.

here are 2 pics i found with the submersible lights.

I was mostly worried about them floating to the top... I actually like those anchoring ideas- particular with the beads!

I've seen the fairy berries before but I haven't heard of the floralyte- I'll have to look into that.

I love the submerged flower and floating candle as well. I made these for my centerpieces. I did however find another great alternative. I will see if I can find the pic. A tall "er" vase was used and was filled with water beads and multiple flowers all the way to the top. They looked very elegant.

I personally think you don't need a floating candle on top. They look great without them too!

Here are some for about a dollar a piece. For me, I would wonder if they would stay lit all day, since we will be decorating our reception venue first thing in the morning.

That's a good point, I should factor in the set-up. I've seen ones you can turn on/off with a remote but I bet they are much more expensive...

I bet they are too. I can just see the staff at our venue not remember to turn the little thingies on and fill the vases before we get there. But actually, I have been thinking about this all day since the thread was first posted. I have the tall vases, but haven't bought any candles yet. Maybe I will buy a submersible light for a test at Hobby Lobby and see how long it lasts. It would have to last for at least 12 hours if they were to be turned on by my posse of decorators the morning of the wedding. If I do that I will report back. ;-)

I actually did a wedding for a girl, she had the submergable lights in her centerpieces. They lasted about 18 hours and some are still working when I got them out the other day. They have the on/off switch.

I just read an article that said they last between 36 and 48 hours

I did a test with the floralyte and mine stayed lit for almost 24 hours so I think you would be fine with them.

Also, I made a centerpiece with the water beads filling the vase, and every 3 or 4 inches I would put a silk flower. When you fill the vase with water, the beads "disappear" and the flowers look awesome and stay in place.
