Incorporating a sword...

Lydia, on September 26, 2012 at 8:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hey gals!

My FH has a sword that he REALLY wants to use somewhere, somehow, in our wedding ceremony or reception. A friend of mine did the cutting of the cake with a sword and I don't really want to copy her. Any ideas??

It's just a regular sword... battle ready. And no, he's not wearing a uniform. Smiley smile

Other than the cake cutting... I don't really know how to use a sword. What if you incorporate sword-elements, but not the actual sword? Like make the sword part of your theme?

We already have a theme... the only other thing that i saw while googling about it was the irish tradition of presenting the bride with a family sword.. but it's not THAT nice of a sword.. lol... I'm irish too so that was cool.

What about having him wear it...like a soldier might have worn it...during the ceremony?

We are using one in our ceremony but our ceremony calls for it. Our ceremony has a Celtic feel to it - here is exactly how the ceremony reads:

If either of you know of any reason why these vows should not be made speak now. Swear you now, on this sacred blade, that there is no reason known to you that this union should not proceed.

Both of us will answer together - "I do so swear"

Unfortunately I currently do not have a pic of this special blade that we will be using during our ceremony, but it is a good 30"-36" in length.

I'm not sure how big or important the sword itself is, but could you use it as an alternative guest book ..maybe with a shield since they to be bigger with more space to write?

If your guests know how obsessed [if he even is] with this sword & if you don't mind seeing it some of your most important pictures for the rest of your life haha, I think it'd be cool to see him wearing it during the ceremony, like someone else suggested.

Swords fit in well with my theme, so I've had a few ideas. I have thought about having my bridesmaids carry swords with a string of flowers around it down the aisle. I originally wanted a swordfight at my reception, but that won't be happening now. My mom thought having my FH swordfight my brothers for my hand in marriage would be pretty funny.

and not sword, but close, I will have a dagger tucked away in my garter so when he does the garter toss, he finds it. lol Thought it would add a unique little twist that would probably get some laughs too.

Short of that, having him wear it sheathed would be a good option. Give me time, and i might come up with more. lol

You say that the sword isn't nice enough to be presented but as a collector of bladed weapons I disagree. All that a blade needs to look nice is a little bit of cleaning and polishing. There are plenty of professionals who would be willing to do it but it's easy and cheap to diy

I love this idea, thank you. Is there a link to a site that goes into detail about this that you can share with us?
