Individual cakes for each table

My FW's mom went to a wedding that each table had their own mini cake. The tables cut their own pieces and everyone had a blast. My cousin's MIL works in a bakery so I would hire her to make the cakes (through the bakery) and it is a reasonable price if we go basic on the design. My questions are...

My questions are these:

1.) Has anyone seen this? Thoughts?

2.) Thinking about replacing centerpieces with the little cakes. Thoughts?

I love it. We used to do this when we were catering; we recommended doing a 9"-10" cake on a stand for each table.

    It's a great idea!!

@Julia- that is an AWESOME idea too. Definitely something to consider

I think we would have people cut their own cakes as their table finishes up. There doesn't have to be a thing where we all cut at the same time.

We are actually thinking of doing small 2 tier cakes with each tier a different flavor. That way each table gets 2 flavors.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

ETA- Celia- it's great to hear a vendor's POV as well! I like the idea of the 9-10" cake as well. We will have to see how much each cake will cost and go with whatever fits into the budget and what fits our vision as we get closer to the date!

Friends did this at their reception. They borrowed vintage cake plates/pedestals from relatives. Each table had a sign indicating the cake flavor. We chose our table by what kind of cake we wanted. It was a big hit with the guests!

Your sign could also state, "Longest-married couple, please cut this cake after newly-weds cut theirs."

Woah this is so cute. As long as your venue won't be too hot I think it's adorable. I would probably have staff take away the cakes to slice them while the couple has their cake ceremony and they can return it to the table after.

I think this is a super cute idea! As a guest I'd be into it!

I know by the time dinner is over, no one is really going to look at the centerpieces anyway, but my only suggestion would be to make sure what's left after the cake is removed can still sort of stand alone. Nice votives and a wood slab, stacked books with a bud vase, etc.

I went to a church Christmas party where this was done. The fun part was afterwards when everyone went around trying other table's cake.
