Interfaith Imam?

mahaasim91, on November 8, 2016 at 4:07 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

So.. I was raised Muslim, but I'm not practicing. My FH is Christian but his family is relaxed. We're already good to have an interfaith ceremony at his church if we so choose, but we're looking for an Imam who is willing to help us do a Nikkah ceremony as well for my mother's sake.

@Mahaasim91 congratulations on your engagement! I hope that you will find an Imam who will do your Nikkah. I think calling around is really the best way to find out.

I am a recent revert, from what my FH has told me you don't need an Imam for the Nikkah. All you need is your sadaq from your FH and a trusted muslim man to do the Nikkah, and someone from your family for you. After that you could get legally married at city hall or by the interfaith officiant at your FH's church, assuming the person who performs your Nikkah is not a registered officiant. This is all based on what is comfortable for you. Congratulations again on your engagement! I hope this helps.

Hi I know this is a super old post, but what did you end up doing? I’m in a similar situation right now and would love some insight!

It actually worked out great! First we had an intimate park wedding (50ish people) and went to a judge to sign our license. My mom called around and talked to several imams, and the one closest to us was amazing! He did the Nikkah for us, explaining to my husband what to say in English. My advice is to call around and talk to the imams, I’m sure you will find one that is understanding. In the end, they will be probably pleased that you’re doing the nikkah and being married in God’s eyes so they’ll agree to help.
