International registry

Hello everyone! Registry question here... my FH lives in Japan and I am moving there in a month. I've looked into registries but all charge an arm and a leg to ship to Japan. We aren't going to have a lot of space in Japan... so do I opt for a honeymoon registry? I need any and all advice... do I simply skip the registry altogether?

I would skip the registry. Usually, a small registry or no registry is a tactful way to let guests know cash or a check would be a good choice if they're considering getting a wedding gift.

I was living in the states before our wedding and H was in Europe. We skipped a registry. It makes it way easier, trust me. All of our guests brought either cash or checks (except for one and unfortunately, we had to leave that gift in the US for now). Shipping is painful haha the costs are out of control. My aunt and cousin BM still wanted to throw me a shower and wrote “not registered, be creative!” and everyone knew I was moving so I got a few gift cards, luggage/travel accessories, and a few smaller decorative things for my new home that were easy enough to pack (H and I used our trips visiting each other to start moving my stuff so I could pack things from the shower). Obviously I don’t advocate throwing your own shower but a great idea if a family member insists on throwing one!

I would skip. Honeymoon funds take money from your guests (like 5-10 percent) and keep it yourself. Why not just do a small registry!Smiley smile

@ashley - even a small registry while moving overseas can make it incredibly difficult to ship. It sounds like OP is planning on taking only what she can pack in a suitcase. Even if 20 people bring you something off a “small” registry, all of a sudden you can’t pack anything. Also people may see the registry and think other physical gifts are okay.

My mom thinks asking for giftcards to major stores like Costco and amazon (which both are in Japan) is the way to go. Ideas?

I would skip the registry and maybe do cash gifts instead?

You can do one at Amazon Japan and have it ship to your FH's house. Also be careful on the gift card you buy here in the US, they may or may not work at the store in Japan.
