Intimate Wedding, Large Party

I have a very large hispanic family, that I would love to have in my wedding. Excluding people would cause problems, since we all are very close and always meet during the holidays and birthdays. However, weddings in New York State are very expensive. My fiancé and I were thinking about having an intimate wedding in NY (40 - 50 people). Then having a very large party in my native country, in my parent's back yard. The cost of a large party in my native country would be a lot more affordable than in NY (family members would help to decorate, prepare food and help to serve drinks). I would like to know of your opinions on this. Has anyone done this before?

    My brother and SIL did this. They had a small wedding in her home state with her guests and a few relatives from his side. The next week, they had a big reception in our home state (where they live) with all our family and their friends. I don’t like doing second receptions where everything is local, but it makes a lot of sense with big distances.

    Yes, that sounds like a good compromise! Then you can save money and still spend time with your family. My only concern is that planning would be a bit more complicated than if you went with a venue that's closer to home
