Invitation Wax Seal

Kirst, on May 9, 2012 at 11:24 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

I'm thinking of doing the wax seal for my invitations, has anyone done this? Where can I get the best deal on wax etc, and what's the best type to use? I plan on stamping the outer envelope. Will this last thru the mailing process? How much extra will it cost me to mail (weight wise)?

Any other tips/tricks would be appreciated!!

My envelopes are the Pochettes ones, so will I need to use a double sided tape or something also, incase the wax comes off??Any other tips/tricks would be appreciated!!

I haven't used it, but I've received it. When it arrived half the seal had broken off in shipping.

I was thinking of using the petals~ I was going to seal them with a personalized sticker (vistaprint has some), or a belly band w/ a monogrammed tag.

The invitations I've received with a wax seal were inside of a larger, plain closed envelope. If you don't mind the double sealing that may work best and would probably preserve the wax seal/stamp.

Is it also a square invite? Those also add to the cost of the stamp.

Have you considered outer envelopes and just having the inner envelope with the seal?

You're sealing the petal enclosure itself right? And then putting it in the outer envelope to address & mail? The seal should be okay, but you run the risk of it chipping or breaking completely in shipping. I received it in an envelope and the seal was broken. The bits were just shaking around in the envelope. If you have them hand cleared at the post office you probably won't have the issue.

We are doing a wax seal with ours. It's an M, for our new last name.

We used the wax sold at the store we bought our invitations. You can just load it into a glue gun, put a blob on tinfoil, then push the seal into the wax. Let it hold for 5 seconds, then release. We used 'Zots'-clear adhesive dots to attach the seal on the envelope.

Before purchasing the stuff for the seals, make sure you find out if your local post office will hand cancel the invites. Mine told me flat out they wouldn't do it. :-(

Faux wax seals that are more flexible, less weighty, and might hold up better in the mail It's essentially pigmented hot glue.

    - here's one site http://www.waxseals.com/

If you go to www.letterseals.com or www.oldschoolseals.com, you can purchase seals that are already made and come with double stick tape on the back as an alternate option.

on this post - it was an increase to $1.20 - I guess just take one to the post office, ask them, and do a trial run and mail it to yourself

I edited my original post, my envelopes are Pochettes (not petal) so its the same idea but then its a 5x7 envelope not a square. So postage should be normal. Unless they upcharge for the "wax stamp"

@Tiffany P Good IDEA did you do them yet? Thats what my idea is to use a "G"...Can I ask where you got the stamper? And then you used the glue gun wax...So you do it onto tin foil? I'd have thought wax paper would be better lol, stamp it let it dry then use the 'Zots", do they sell those at like Michaels arts and crafts?

Just curious if you've done them all yet it they held up, if the wax was too heavy for the 'Zot" and if they lasted thru the mail, and if it was an extra postage to send them??

    THANKS!!

@Hayley C thanks I'll check those sites out

@Future Mrs. L how did they come out? Last in the mailing? Extra postage fee? Do you have photos? you got the seal & the wax all there? did you just use the wax or a "zot" sticker to attach it to envelope?

Ours are on our envelopes, ready to go out in the mail today or tomorrow. Won't know how they hold up until people get them, I'll let you know in a few days.

We got our stamper at the same store we bought our invites. The picture of it is below. Yes, you do it on the tin foil and when the seal is cooled, you just peal it off. Yes, you can buy Zots at Michaels-that is where we got ours.

Our invites already cost extra because of the weight and size, the seal didn't add extra to it, but check with your post office first.

Hey Kirsten. I did wax sealing. My invites didn't cost extra because like Tiffany, we already had an extra cost associated with our invites.

I high recommend the website below. The wax they send you is specifically for wax sealing and is meant to withstand mailing.

For those that did use the wax seal stamp, did you find it helpful to drip the wax on paper or foil first the glue the seal to the envelope? Worried the seals will break in the mail

I ordered my stamp and the wax separately via Amazon. It was $13.99 for the stamp and $9.99 for the wax ($17.98 for wax after shipping & handling, comes from China). The wax is very good quality, gets hard pretty fast, and does not break. I did some test runs and poured right on an envelop and it was fine, did not bleed through.
