Invitations!!

Jenna, on April 1, 2021 at 11:36 AM Posted in Planning 1 21

Okay so, I am having a pretty expensive and grand wedding that will be black tie. My fiancé and I didn't want to go overboard on the invitations but also didn't want anything cheep. We ended up picking out beautiful invitations that we loved but we didn't pay too much attention to the paper...which then I remembered is very important. When we got our proofs it said that the paper material would be matte, which is pretty cheep. We used matte for our engagement party invitations and our save the dates. When I asked to change the paper to either linen or cotton, since it would then also change the designer the price doubled! Invitations are to be thrown out once the wedding is over but this is like the presentation to our wedding.

Please help! What should we do?!

Are you 100% sold on using that designer for invitations? If not you could always look at minted or try to find another designer and compare prices maybe?

I agree that a black tie event needs more elegant initiations, but at the same time, I think a matte finish would work fine if you dress up the presentation. Adding a vellum belly wrap or cover to keep everything together and including a wax seal would be gorgeous!

As pp suggested I would suggest looking on minted.com as well.
They give you a selection of card stock to pick from as well as ordering stamps return labels or prints, water markings, I think they also offer wax markings. I think it’s worth checking out. And their customer service is great! If you feel like it’s too expensive you can ask customer service if they have any discounts and they will definitely give you one. You can also stack discounts

Just as an example they have custom wax seal is as shown. They have hundreds and hundreds of different designs to select from, and they’ll even make a personal monogram. The stamps are great because you can match them to your invitation suit as well as the watermarks and return address prints or labels.

Minted has great card stock options. There least expensive option is honestly pretty good. There all in one suites are a great buy also.

FYI, I also just realized that due to USPS, you won’t be able to order custom stamps from any website any longer! This took place in June 2020! I just went to order some more custom stamps and saw this! Such a bummer!

I am 100% sold with this designer and already put a down payment so, I need to go with this boutique as well. I have a ribbon and crystal broach added to the invitation I just don't know if doubling the price is a smart idea or not for the paper.

Gotcha! Just wasn't sure if you could have other options!

I think what you have is perfectly fine with matte paper! I don't find doubling the price of your invites worth it for just a different paper type, especially since it's something that will get thrown away shortly after your wedding.

Thanks so much for your help! I'm still on the fence however just because matte is one of the cheapest papers when it comes to wedding invitations. Also, my friend is getting married at the same venue, also having it black tie and she had cotton invitations.

Do they offer engraving on that paper? Engraving is truly elegant, and will up the ante of any invitation.

If you are already invested 100%, then I would say go for it! The invitations speak volumes and you kind of want your guests to get the right impression of your wedding. If you think about it, compared to everything else that I’m sure your wedding will cost it is only a minor expense to get a very big message across and present your wedding to your guests. That’s just my opinion. If it’s pushing you over your financial limits you also can totally do without it. But I would say just add it on. You only get married once!

You’re welcome! Also just thought about this, but if letterpress is an option then you can always do that too! It really elevates invitations!

But it sounds like you really want the other types of paper, so if you really want it, go for it!

I agree with PP— the invitations set the tone for the event. I too am guilty for doing that. I would look at where you could cut back so the costs aren’t that visible. Ex: favors, day of event stationary.

Good luck, I’m sure they will be beautiful!

I’m having a black tie event as well. My invitations (detail/RSVP/hotel) are matte, but the main invite is acrylic. Very modern vibe! I added an envelope liner, pocket, wax seal and belly band. Which really adds an extra element. I think your ribbon and crystal broach will add the extra flare you are looking for! I wouldn’t worry to much about the paper. Honestly, I don’t think many people even notice. Plus, like you said they get thrown in the trash after.

I never understood the hoopla over invitations. They get thrown out by everyone except maybe your grandmother. Don’t get too wrapped up in paper textures and whatnot. This is one area you can easily save money.

If it’s the presentation and you want to make a first impression with the invitation (without it looking “cheap”), then pay for the upgraded paper.

Agree with this. I’ve never kept an invitation beyond the wedding date, therefore couldnt bring myself to break the bank over my own invitations. As long as you love the design, which it sounds like you do, dont worry about paper texture

It’s easy to get caught up in paper LOL I’m crazy about paper and I do notice when it’s super nice. Not to judge if it’s not, but it stands out in a lovely way when it’s quality paper. Matte can be very nice paper though, matte does not reduce the quality, though!
I also turn things over to see if it’s engraved and it makes me happy to see the displacement of fibers.
