Invite time for sunset wedding

Cilya, on December 29, 2020 at 8:49 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 10

Our sunset will be at 6:03 p.m. How early should I make the start time so that we can get our ceremony to be while the sun is setting? Was thinking 30 min? Thanks!

If your ceremony is going to be at 6 pm, your invitation time should say 6 pm.

People typically arrive 15-30 minutes before the ceremony begins. If you put the start time 30 minutes early and then people get there 30 minutes before that, that means they’re sitting outside, presumably in the cold since your wedding is in March, for an hour before the ceremony even begins.

Yes, guests know to arrive early so you should put 6:00 pm on your invites. Otherwise your guests will arrive extra early and be annoyed. We went to a wedding last year and they told everyone to arrive 30 minutes early. It was a very hot day in a barn with just fans. It was awful. Even with putting the time a half hour early one guest showed up in the middle of them doing the ceremony otherwise everyone else was there way early and super annoyed to be sitting there sweating.

As others have said, for a 6:00 p.m. wedding you should put 6:00 p.m. on your invitation. Guests tend to arrive 15-30 minutes early.

I would say standard is about 30 minutes or less unless you are having a Catholic wedding which is normally much longer.

This is very much regional. Most of the weddings I've been to have a "doors open" time on the invite, and then a 15 - 30 minute buffer before the actual ceremony starts. To give people time to get in, put away coat, find seats, and settle in. I personally would not assume everyone knows to come 15 0 30 minutes early - that would be a disaster in my social circles!

That said, assuming you have an outdoor wedding, make sure your ceremony isn't exactly at sunset regardless! If the sun goes down at 6 and you start at 6, you might end up with the ceremony being mostly in darkness. You probably want to hit that "golden hour" that stars before sunset, when the sun is setting and the sky is pretty colors.

My Ceremony time was at 6 pm and thats what I put on the invites, for the most part people will arrive between 15-30 minutes before anyway, thats what happened at my wedding. I started at 6 pm without a hitch, everyone was seated, there were 2 people who came late but they hit crazy traffic unfortunately and didn't interrupt the ceremony, just stayed off to the back.
