Irish handfasting

Jenna, on January 7, 2018 at 5:38 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6
I’m doing things in memory of loved ones who passed away and couldn’t be there. My grandma was Irish and I’m interested in doing the Irish handfasting but wanted to know what I have to do to make it an “Irish” and what does my officiant needs to say. I looked it up and I had no luck

My SIL did one on the beach. They had to use a chair sash since it was a last minute change. It is a simple and beautiful addition to the ceremony. There are places where you can purchase sashes or decorated ropes. You acn even make one. My SIL recited thier vows, traded rings, did the binding with officiant, said the binding vow, got introduced as Mr & Mrs, then did thier first married kiss. There are varients you can do about exactly when during the ceremony it happens or it can be the whole ceremony itself. Just be aware that you need to find an officant that knows about them first. Brownie points if they've done one before.

Technically the handfasting is derived from Celtic pagan traditions (think druids and Stonehenge) and there are ceremony scripts you can find depending how authentic you want to be. http://www.handfastings.org/abouthandfastings.htm
This website is a good tool and reference point. There is also a ceremony script on the site.
Not sure if you’re religious or if your grandmother was since that could make a difference for you. There is also an Irish wedding blessing that could be read in her honor- I attached an image.

We are getting married on St Patrick's Day and we are also doing a handfasting. Reading one of these or maybe reading a blessing of the hands. Not technically Irish, but we liked it.

I’ve always loved the handfasting in weddings. Could be a stretch, but what if you had a piece of her dress or one of her scarves and used that?
