Irish / St Patricks Day Wedding

AF412, on January 31, 2018 at 4:50 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

Hello All!

We're trying to come up with ideas for a theme or color scheme for our wedding. My (very Irish) FI really wants to incorporate St Patrick's Day & Irish elements into the wedding. We are getting married the weekend of, and likely going to Ireland the following week for our Honeymoon.

I like the idea but don't want Rainbows, Pots of Gold and Leprechauns! Any ideas of how to incorporate this without it looking like a cheesy St Pattys Day school party?

Pinterest hasn't been much help for inspiration.

I would do lavender in your bouquet and incorporate lace. We are having a 1930s Irish wedding. I would do things that say Irish to you. Hope this helps.

Guiness at the bar? Just don't have corned beef & cabbage for dinner! LOL, it's nasty and i have it on good authority that Irish people don't actually eat it!

Maybe some subtle touches of clover in the decor?
ETA: and you said no leprechauns but some cake toppers would be super cute and not totally in-your-face.

I just googled St. Patrick’s Day wedding and found tons of pictures and ideas. You can add subtle touches of green in your flowers, table linens and decor without it looking like you vomited shamrocks all over the place.

I would take a broader approach to include other things that Ireland is known for: literature- James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, an Yeats to name just a few; music and dance- Irish Step Dancing like RiverDance,Sinead O'Connor, U2, Enya, The Dubliners, The Chieftans and The Pogues; food and beverages- soda bread, lamb stew, guiness; clothing- fisherman knit sweaters.

Just one example of how to include something would be to use big chunky wool runners instead of the typical organdy or satin.

Obviously you can't include all these elements, but I would choose a couple that are meaningful to the two of you and stay away from the stereotype leprechauns and shamrocks.

Pots of shamrocks should be widely available around your wedding date. Perhaps some of those on your table. Bells of Ireland (flowers) in the bouquets or centerpieces.

I would use the colors, gold accents, a lot of greenery, yellow flowers. I love the green shoes idea!

We are getting married on St. Patrick's Day this year and we just incorporated a color scheme that had some green in it and we will have a few other small details and green beer at the bar. We didn't want to do anything over the top, but since we're both Irish, it was fun to throw some stuff in there.

I am getting married on St. Patrick's Day this year! My family's very Irish, my FH's husband is not, but he loves me and is letting me put an Irish spin on our wedding as I agreed to take his last name, so if I'm giving up my Irish last name, you best believe I'm going to have the best St. Patrick's Day event ever. I definitely hear you and we are doing the Irish theme, but I didn't want my wedding to look like a box of Lucky Charms. Gold, green, and white are essentially our colors. We are doing a dark green for BM dresses (David's Bridal color juniper) and we are doing gold ties for the GMs. I am incorporating some horseshoes as they are good luck for Irish weddings. We are doing buckets of baby's breath down the aisle for our ceremony (and after moving to cocktail hour to put on the high top tables for decoration) and we are tying horseshoes around them. My aunt owns an Irish store so I got us toasting glasses from her that both have the claddagh on them, one says bride, one says groom. We made a sign for the bar that says let the shenanigan's begin with a shamrock as the apostrophe. Now that St. Patrick's Day stuff is out in the stores, I did find a couple of cute little Irish signs that I bought that we might throw on our sweetheart table or cake table. Nothing bright green with leprechauns but more things that say lucky in love with a shamrock. My dad is wearing a kilt in our family's colors and my niece is going to perform an Irish step dance during dinner (these are things my dad added to the table, which I think we are starting to push our limits to becoming over the top St. Paddy's Day, but it didn't bother me that much, so I let it slide). I am currently having a debate with my dad to the amount of Irish music that is played. I said we could have some played during cocktail hour and dinner, but I want popular dancing music. He wants some Irish music that people can dance to. I'm going to have to tell my DJ to just ignore the man in the kilt whenever he requests more Irish music. One of my friends asked me if I was going to have the bridal party walk in to Shipping Up to Boston (we live in MA). I hadn't thought of that, and might not choose that song, but might pick fun Irish music for the BP to be announced in with.
I was planning on posting a BAM on the discussion board, so feel free to check it out.

My FH and is entire family is WAY Irish! I'm trying to incorporate a few things because of it: Bells of Ireland in flowers, tying the knot/handfasting, my ffil will do a traditional Irish toast with shots of Irish Whiskey, having a braid in my hair, and there will be a sign at the bar that says, "Bride's favorite drink: Whiskey Ginger with Jameson -- Go figure!!" (Jameson was one of our first drinks together, a way we've always celebrated events, and my FH is a redhead lol) (also this truly is my favorite drink!)

Also, maybe think of gold bm dresses?

I'm doing a Christmas/winter wonderland theme for the wedding & found a gorgeous hunter green suit (for free to jeep with 5 rentals!) for the groom. This would also be so perfect for your theme! Mabey gold shimmer bridesmaid dresses and lots of greenery??

My sister is having an Irish wedding. Very Irish family on both sides lol. She's having lavender flowers with some nice sage greenery. Also not a custom many know about, blue is the traditional Irish wedding dress color. We're on the hunt for a dusty/smoky blue wedding dress. Get on Pinterest and Google and explore! You'll find a lot of neat ideas

I'll be very excited to see your BAM!

Somehow I never thought to have our DJ slip in an Irish song or 2! One or two won't hurt!

I’m getting married on St. Patricks Day because that happened to be when my venues were available. I was adamant I did not want a themey wedding.

my colors are blush, gold, mauve, dark red, and hunter green (with black too). I have some dark green velvet table clothes on high boy tables and greenery in florals but that is about it. For my wedding gift bags, I have cloth totes with a black bow on them plus I put a shamrock enamel lapel pin right above the bow on the handle. My mother is also wearing green. One of our 5 cocktails is made with matcha so it’s green.

So so I feel like we aren’t ignoring it but there is some green and small pops of St. Patricks Day.

First of all I'm Irish and I do eat corned beef and cabbage but I wouldn't want it at a wedding.

Second of all there's a wild shrub with flower in Ireland that its said when the flowers are in bloom it is kissing season, the flowers bloom 10 or 11 months a year. I don't remember their name and I don't know your budget but look into those flowers.

I would also add Celtic designs, shamrock, and wool.

Another date twin chiming in over here 😊
We are also honeymooning in Ireland!

I am working the green into my outfit by braiding some greenery and flowers into my hair, that way nobody tries to pinch me on my wedding day!

Yes, the traditional Irish wedding dress is blue, which I wanted. Ended up not working out, but I will be wearing some beautiful Irish lace. If you'll also not be wearing blue, you could work in the light blue as the color worn by the bridal party?
*special note: traditionally, it is considered bad luck to wear a green garment if you are being wed outdoors. (You blend in with the woods and the faeries are more tempted to steal you.)

If you want an obvious Irish color scheme: Kelly green, orange, and white, of course! We are doing teal and orange, with a focus on orange flowers.

Whiskey and lace are great Irish elements to work into the theme. We elected against the green beer, but definitely considered it...

We are, however, playing some Celtic music and Irish jigs during dinner--the first half hour or so of the reception. Furthermore, we're having a harpist play the ceremony. If I hadn't chosen a dj for the reception, a band with a flute and fiddle would have been very fun!

Might I suggest a dark green suit? My fiancé just tried one on this weekend at a local rental shop and we both loved it, since the color is still pretty subtle and neutral (Hunter Green Suit by Ike Behar).
