Is a hair and makeup trial worth it?

Marissa M, on January 16, 2018 at 12:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 18
I can’t decide on whether or not I should do a hair and makeup trial. The trial would cost $95 plus tip, and it not sure I want to spend that extra money. Is it worth it or should I skip it?

Definitely worth it in my opinion. You want to make certain that the person you're hiring does a good job in creating your look. This is not something that you want to stress about on the day of your wedding. Plus, a trial helps the HMUA to figure out a game plan for your wedding day so that you can more accurately schedule the day.

I think so. It seems like a lot of money but hair and makeup can turn out so different especially if you have Never worked with that person before. I suggest using it before another event like your engagement shoot or a big day or something where you are do you want your hair and make up to look wonderful and then you feel like you’re getting more bang for your buck plus it’s a great dated just feel pampered we near maybe feeling overwhelmed and stressed with all the wedding planning, it’s part of the budget! Enjoy!

100% worth the money. I actually paid 150 for mine plus tip.

It took us about 15 minutes to figure out what lip color I should wear cause the color I had bought to wear was way too bright once I put it on with a full face of makeup (looks great otherwise). Also, figuring out what your hair will do and how your makeup will look. I sent my HMUA an email later in the day telling her how things lasted and she made suggestions that we'll try for the wedding.

I got married in Maine, about 3.5 hours away from where I lived, so I hired a hair stylist in Maine. I certainly didn't want to make that drive for a trial, so I winged it and saved the money. She nailed it just as I thought she would. I was pretty confident in my stylist and her portfolio.

Even if it hadn't been so far away, I still wouldn't have done a trial. She had done the style I was looking for many times before, so I figured why wouldn't she be able to recreate it on me? Doing a trial with a professional seems like a waste. I certainly wouldn't ask a carpenter to build me a "trial" house when it's his profession and he's done it a million times before haha.

I think if you're picky about your hair, or indecisive about what you want, then it might make sense to do one. If you're set on something though, or easy going, I personally think it's silly.

Worth it! I would never let someone touch my hair or face for such an important day that I had never worked with before.

I will be doing a trial due to a major hair malfunction that I had while getting my hair done for my senior prom. I told her exactly what I wanted, and by the end of it was almost in tears because she had hair spayed my hair into oblivion, offering no way to fix the style besides rinsing off and starting over.
Of course, if you feel prepared, and send her information/pictures of what you want beforehand you might be able to avoid it, but I think $100 is okay to spend if it offers you peace-of-mind.

It depends on how elaborate your style will be. I did and frankly I am glad I did as I realized I did not want an updo! So it may help to solidify a decision. Remember, this is your face and hair on your wedding day - do you want to chance it? Having said that, I booked an appt with an experienced stylist without a trial run with her. (My practice updo was at a school.) My hair was pretty simple and I was not too fussy. I was very happy with the result.

Edited to add: I am not sure if you wax your eyebrows or not - I had my brows, lip and chin waxed and although I have had great success at a beauty school, I went to a salon with a proven pro for those services. No burnt eyebrows for me!!! LOL!

I think it was worth it. I ended up finding out during my trial I didn't like the hairstyle I originally picked. It was beautiful, but it ended up not being flattering on me. I'm glad I found out prior to my wedding and my hairstylist and I were able to find another hairstyle I loved on me.

Absolutely worth it. you want to make sure your hair and makeup people understand exactly what you want and the only way to be sure is with a trial.

I'm doing it. Not only to make sure I'm happy with their work, but to make sure I actually like the hairstyle and makeup I pick.

Worth it if it's in your budget. If it's not it's not the end of the world

I would not get my hair and makeup done by someone who I did not have a trial with for my big day. It gives you a chance to tell them what you do like, what you don’t, and stuff like that. If you’re not picky, then skip it. I on the other hand am VERY picky with makeup and hair, so I want a trial. If it doesn’t go well, I will be doing my makeup. Your face is a focal point for the wedding, so I wouldn’t risk it

I would say it is worth it! I had a trail before I even did my engagement shoot and I am so happy I did. I never wear more then eyeliner and mascara when it comes to makeup and when I had the trail and had a full face of makeup my eyes got very irritated and puffy. If I wanted to do it last minute it would have been a disaster. Now I also know when I am looking for a MHUA for our wedding that I can tell them that I had a bad experience with makeup and they can help me with the right stuff that I need.

    Definitely, IMHO.

I cant wait for my hair trial, i cant wait to have that peace of mind after i see how my hair is being done. same with makeup. yeah its an extra charge, but i would rather know what im paying for and pay a little extra for that knowledge, than wing it day of and end up possibly hating it.

its not necessary, by any means, but its up to you and depends on who is doing it, and how much you trust them, as well as the look you're going for. it really is entirely up to you. you could get amazingly lucky like @Kelsey here in the comments who got BEAUTIFUL hair experience, or you could end up like many are on here where they hate it and dont know whats wrong with it.

if you want more simple, standard makeup and simple hair and are confident in your vendor choice, maybe you would consider skipping it. but if you want any particular styles or are picky about makeup i would definitely schedule one.

Definitely worth it. Unlike building a house, you do not have the luxury of time. The day of your wedding will fly by so fast that it is very helpful if your HMUA knows exactly what to to with your look, and the tips/tricks for making it work for your specific hair and skin type (and any special products needed). I have worked with my HMUA for over 5 years - she did my 1st wedding - and I've used her for professional pictures, etc. - and I STILL did a trial with her for this wedding. Each look she and I create together is unique for the situation so it is helpful to practice it, take photos of it and then analyze what we like, what we want to change, etc. Then it helps build the timeline for the day because now we know how much time she needs for my hair, and how much time she needs for my makeup.

I think it's worth it, especially if you're doing a makeup or hair style that you normally don't do.

When my roommate got married, I was so glad that she did the trial, because it turned out she wanted to do the eye makeup a bit lighter than originally planned. She felt more confident on her look for her wedding day after.

For your hair I think it depends on how much work the style you're looking to do is. For the makeup, I think it is necessary. I had a makeup trial with someone and it just wasn't what I was expecting. She did a good job, but I just had entirely too much makeup up and I was looking for something a little more natural looking.
