Is AAA worth it?

Sarah, on December 16, 2012 at 9:52 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 14

I am trying to plan a honeymoon to Disney world and I talked to a AAA rep who gave me a quote for the vacation, without air fair. It was more than what I would pay if I just booked throughdisney's website. I thoughtAAA would be cheaper. Is it worth the money to buy aAAA membership for saving money on our honeymoon? Do you just show your card to the desk when you check in to get a better rate? Is there a better way to get a good rate at Disney world?

I have AAA since I drive a lot. But if you aren't going to save money then I wouldn't get it. I have gotten lucky when booking out trips through Expedia I have found some really awesome deals there.

I don't think it's worth it for the discounts. I've gotten a few with marriott but that's about it. However it has saved my butt as far as car trouble is concerned!

    Hi Sarah,

We just booked our honeymoon to Disney World (and by we I mean me). I started off looking at discounts and Expedia etc and got really overwhelmed. I ended up using a great travel agent. I actually found her on this site (her name is Randi). If you would like her contact info send me a message and I'd be happy to share. I think it is really up to you who you use, but this way was incredibly stress free.

Usually booking with AAA or a travel agent can get you extras, not really deep discounts if thats what you are looking for. Yes I booked my cruise through AAA and it was the same price if I had booked myself but AAA has a program where we are getting vouchers for dinner to the places you normally have to pay for as well as champagne in our room etc. The "perks" so to say.

If the agent is not giving you anything extra, ask. Say why should I book with you vs on my own? If they can't give you anything, dont do it. Go on your own.

I've never used AAA. I've tried.. they just aren't really worth it. I'm looking for a travel agent myself. Anybody have suggestions?! Canton, Ohio here! :-)

We have kept a AAA membership for years,..mostly for the road service, towing, in case of wrecks or breakdowns, dead battery, etc. It's been a life saver more than once. In booking travel, we never use AAA any more ,,but do get discounts from many hotels and parks, etc. when we book our own and ask for the AAA discount. We have also used their travelers checks in the past (many years ago)...covered if they are lost or stolen. Those are nice if you travel out of the US and want to avoid using a debit card that will incur big charges each time you use it. But we haven't used those in years, so idk what using debit cards is like now other than in US. And even though we have a GPS, we still use their TripTiks,,,lots of good info not on our GPS and up-to-date construction and such that our GPS doesn't always update enough to cover.

But to book hotels and such, we've found that we get bigger discounts booking ourselves and asking for AAA discounts

I think you can get a good deal without getting a AAA membership.

One another note, for those with AAA for emergency road service - if you have towing coverage on your insurance policy, you will get the same emergency road service for less than $10 a year!

Sarah - I have AAA for the auto benefits (roadside assistance, etc.) but I don't think it gets you anything all that special for travel.

Travel prices are set by the suppliers (Disney, Royal Caribbean, etc.) and should be the same regardless of how you purchase the trip (directly through the supplier, through an online "DIY" service like Travelocity, or through your local travel agent). The main difference is in the level of service, advice and guidance that you receive. You can book your honeymoon directly with Disney. Or you can use a travel agent, pay the same price, and get customized advice and hand-holding that really makes the difference for an important trip like this.

AAA does give you a discount but only if the package is not already discounted through Disney. I do use AAA for all my Disney vacations but mostly because I can book it a year in advance and not have to worry about paying it off until 45 days prior to departure. They've also been great allowing us to make changes to our package as Disney discounts and offers come available without us having to pay Disney change fees. The last four trips we were able to upgrade to free Disney dining, got two complete sets of free luggage and beach towels for everyone in our party.

I wouldn't necessarily purchase AAA just to plan a Disney vacation, but since we often use their other services (road side, no fee notary, car title transfer, etc) we find that we more than cover the yearly membership fee

We have been to WDW 5 times. The first time we went on a Disney Cruise and land tour to Disney. I have always booked our trips independently and gotten the best price with a AAA discount. The clerks have never asked to see our AAA card, but wedo carry it just in case. Disney is notorious for not giving much of a discount. Military and teachers are offered discounts, but I think that's about it. Packages through AAA are mostly for convenience. Some large companies do offer travel deals. Also check Costco for their packages.

    Regards,

    Kari

I'd say it is 100% worth it for the roadside assistance. (Who else would you call to say, "We have a dead battery, and we're at campsite #63 in Back of the Beyond campground"?) As far as travel goes, though, you're best off checking with a few different places, and booking through AAA only if there is a discount or other advantage.
