Is anyone else bothered by the word ‘tacky’?

Michelle, on November 17, 2021 at 1:35 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 6
There are so many alternatives that aren’t as hurtful and convey so much more information too. It comes across as a mean dig because someone can even if that isn’t the intention at all. As a knee jerk result, you go to one extreme of panic and needing to please everyone who doesn’t matter in the end or you go the opposite and tune it all out.

Something may not be your style or it is offensive/inappropriate to those attending but there are kinder, gentler ways to get the point across. “I don’t personally like this” or “this would never fly with our families or friends” goes much farther than “oh that’s tacky!” which is tossed around so much that it doesn’t have much meaning beyond hurt.

The word tacky does not bother me personally, or in any way make me feel “hurt”. Tacky simply means that something is lacking in quality, style, good taste, etc. When someone says they feel something is tacky, I know exactly what they mean in one word, without them having to write out a sentence or paragraph explaining it in detail. I would much prefer the one word explanation- it’s quicker, easier and the definition is universally known and understood.

I get it. I've noticed some pretty harsh comments on here lately. The term "tacky" is also pretty relative to the person saying it. Everyone has different views on what is and what isnt.

This is how I feel, although I acknowledge the different words can have different connotations based on the reader's location, age, background, native language, etc. Because this is an international forum, I do think it makes sense to try to use clear, descriptive language with minimal use of regional idioms. "Tacky" on its own is probably not that helpful even if it's not overtly offensive.

I never really thought of it that way but i suppose because tacky in general does have a negative connotation and meaning to it, that it absolutely can be hurtful.

I do feel that way. But I also get irked when people say “that is stupid” or “they are terrible” instead of “I think that’s stupid/terrible”. Opinions are not fact and I think the way you say something is important. But that’s just me.

I don't the word "tacky" because really I've heard a lot of people on here not liking it. I can see that, it sounds really negative.
