Is anyone else having trouble finding a hair/ Mua?

VM, on November 16, 2020 at 10:49 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 16

I am getting married on May 30, 2021 (hopefully). I started looking for a makeup artist/ hair stylist in September and I am not having any luck. I have basically emailed everyone in the DMV area and people are either already booked or do not answer emails/ calls. I have messaged artists via wedding wire, email, their website inquiry and sometimes I don't hear back from them at all! Some that are available don't do phone consultations, they just state that I need to sign a contract, put down a deposit and schedule a trial. Is this normal? I have phone consultations with all my other vendors. Is anyone else running into this issue? Thank you in advance!

Until recently, professional HMU rarely came to individual clients. In a lot of the country there are few who work a lot of hours outside of their salon, or the store or hotel that is their home base. DC or beltway area, people I know have gone to hotels with salons, booking to go there, or ask for those who travel for weekends. There is so much business there, and nightime and weekend galas so common, that hotels can refer you nearby. We are the opposite, WW and the knot list 2 in my state. Resorts and Inns often know the part timers better than the web.

I recommend looking at thumbtack. Have you tried that platform yet?

I did not do a phone consultation prior to signing my contracts. I did search their social media accounts and portfolios. I would also ask if gratuity is included; some stated it was and others it was not.

I was in a wedding in Virginia last month and the bride hired Kevan Lawrence and VyVy . I really liked the way my hair and makeup turned out!

If someone doesn't respond in a timely fashion then move on to the next person. Thumbtack.com is also an option specific to your location.

Hey Wedding Date Twin! What I like to do is look at wedding planners instagrams and often they will tag all the vendors from the various weddings they have done in their photos. Then I go to those MUA/Hair instagram pages to look at their work.

Yes or go straight to their own accounts. Since the OP is in the Maryland area, type in #Baltimoremakeupartist or whatever city you're in.

Your wedding day is our one year anniversary! I hope you can have the wedding you dreamed of.

I found HMUAs one of the most difficult vendors to work with for our wedding. I don't know what it is, but found they took forever to get back to me, often answered my questions in half answers, and just seemed far less put together and professional than our other vendors.

First, I was going to have the girl who usually cut my hair do my hair for my wedding but she was having a baby so she wasn't going to be available. I reached out to the owner of the salon where she is based and the owner kept taking forever to get back to me and I could never get a clear idea of what a wedding contract looked like or how much the service and trial would cost.

So I ended up booking an appointment with a very popular and well rated salon where I knew one of the stylists through a friend (I met her at a wedding and she's engaged to a friend of mine, plus a bunch of my girlfriends have her cut their hair and love her). I had her cut my hair first and loved it, so booked my trial and wedding day through that salon.
I have found that my experience when I am there is amazing, but trying to communicate with them via email or phone is just terrible. I had to cancel my wedding because of Covid but had them style my hair for our elopement and they charged me, so I thought my deposit was going to be applied towards my "redo" wedding day but they never booked it. So I now have a credit there and I inquired about using it as a deposit for our "redo" wedding date (which was supposed to be in 2021), but they said they wouldn't book anything for 2021 until January. They also said that wedding contracts and terms change every year (not just the fees, but they change the whole process yearly) so they couldn't simply just book me a new date. Now our wedding is being postponed/canceled again, so I've also asked if I can just use the credit for haircuts since I don't know if the wedding will ever happen. Crickets. I really like the staff and they do a good job with hair but I'm having a hard time understanding how they have such excellent reviews because their communication is TERRIBLE. I'm not sure if that is just the industry or whatnot, but for whatever reason I found booking wedding hair way more complex and frustrating that just getting a simple haircut.

Oh my Gosh Kari I am so sorry that you had that experience! I think it's definitely the industry. I have been searching for someone for 2 months. Thankfully, the search is finally over! I was able to reach someone and put down my deposit. She was super nice on the phone just terrible at emails. Congratulations on your marriage Smiley smile
