Is anyone else mourning the loss of their last name?

Carly, on August 17, 2010 at 2:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 72

I never doubted the whole name-change thing, but as we get closer (less than 4 weeks to go), I find myself getting sad/anxious about changing my last name. It's like I'm mourning the loss of my identity! Does anyone else feel this way?

I hear you Carly. I have been thinking about this too, but I have more time to mourn than you. I really don't think one should change their last name if they don't want to. But we plan on having kids, and I would like for us all to have the same last name. It's tougher than I thought it would be. Don't you agree?

That is exactly where I am at! It would be fine for now, but once we have kids, I want us all to have the same last name- so I guess now is the time to change it. Grrrrr!

YES YES YES YES YES!!!! Before getting engaged, I was adamant about keeping my name. Though MUCH thought, I've decided to change it, also for the kid thing, but I still have mixed feelings. But I ordered one of those hangers with "Mrs Jones" in wire, and it came yesterday. Seeing my new name in writing made it a little more exciting!

Yes I totally know what you mean! And to make things even more complicated FH has 2 last names! One is Japanese and one is American. I am also Japanese so I want to retain that since my last name is also Japanese and I'd be losing it.

So what I've been thinking is making my last name my middle name cause I don't care for my middle name anyways and taking both his last names. I still want that new identity of us being married but I feel so attached to my own last name at the same time lol It will definitely be harder signing my new name.

Its going to be the hardest part for me! taking my last name as my middle name because I can't let it go completely!! My boss puts our initials on the calendar for who is doing what and he put KH for when I get back.. I was like that looks tooooo weird. Ugh, kinda makes me sad.

I LOVE my FH, but I HATE his last name...So I feel you pain... JennS, my FH's mom did the "old last name is new middle name" thing and he suggested I do that too, but LOVE my middle name and don't wanna lose it... : (

    I'm keeping mine . . . so I will have 4 names . . . with 28 letters . . . that'll be a fun signature, hu?!

As we have been living with each other for almost 4 years now and I feel more like a Caissie now than I do a Balcom as we've become our own little family. Changing my name will only complete the process not to mention we do plan on having children in the future...

I'm also leaving my last name as middle name, as I don't have a middle name. so it won't be gone completely.

@Shauna.. that's hysterical. My last name is NOT hard to spell but no one can get it.

@Ianthe.. Now my last name will be 4 letters. My first name is 4 letters. I feel you with the 28 but 8! Too short going from my italian last name.

Yeah, I'm also changing my last to middle and taking his legally. Socially and profoessionally, I think I'm going to hyphenate.

Ava you could always have 2 middle names ;-) FH suggested I do that but I have never liked my middle name so I am nixing it.

Ianthe, I am glad I am not the only one who will have a long name! My first name is 8 characters and so is my last name. Last name will be made middle name which we don't use our middle names much. But when I take both his last names that equals 14 characters on top of my first name of 8 characters, so 22 total. I will probably just sign my first initial and last names.

I had the same feelings, except I questioned whether or not I would change my last name, which didn't go over very well (not with DH - he just wanted me to be happy, but apparently it's unheard of in southern Indiana for a woman to retain her name!). I found that the day after the wedding, I woke up and nothing was different. This helped a lot. And with travel security what it is, you have to put everything in your current name, which meant I still used my maiden name plenty. It was actually a very slow transition, and one that still isn't fully complete (I keep forgetting my last name is different because it's so rare that i use it). It felt like before the wedding I was constantly putting my name on things and everytime was a reminder that it was going away soon. I also kept my maiden name as a second middle name, and the only problem I ran into with that was at the bank - the guy wanted me to put the middle initial for my first middle name but kept trying to tell me that my maiden

Wasn't important, so no need to put that initial in there. I told him not to put either, since my name is fairly unique, and that if you were going to put one you had to put the other - my maiden name means more to me than my given middle!

Yes, I only have one male cousin with the last name Leibach so I'm kinda sad there are going to be so few of us soon! FH last name is Fitzsimmons so I cannot have Leibach be my middle name... it would sound weird AND be way too long plus my middle name (Anne) is my mom's middle name too sooo Sydney Anne Fitzsimmons it will be Smiley smile I'm with everyone else, I'd keep my last name except I want the same last name as our kids!

Haha my current last name is very hard to pronounce and I don't like spelling it, and FS last name is very easy, but people in Mexico butchered that as well. So it doesn't really matter! lol
