Is anyone else mourning the loss of their last name?

I never doubted the whole name-change thing, but as we get closer (less than 4 weeks to go), I find myself getting sad/anxious about changing my last name. It's like I'm mourning the loss of my identity! Does anyone else feel this way?

I don't want to give up my last name completely, so,I havn't legally changed it yet.I want my husband and daughters last name but i'm thinking about hyphenating and becoming Danice Eve Crawford-Newman.My DH wants me to drop Crawford but he doesn't realize how hard it actually is.If it was the man that was supposed to give up his name,it would NEVER happen...I guarantee it.The women is expected to do all of the sacrificing. I already gave up my body to be a mother and now i'm expected to give up my name to be a wife.Doesn't quite seem fair.

Growing up I always wanted to change my last name because no one ever pronounces it right, and it's long to right out lol.

But once we got engaged, I thought about it a lot, and searched for myself on google and FB (I'm a dork, I know)

I am the ONLY person with my name, after we got married, I'd be one of hundreds! So I was kind of bummed losing the uniqueness.

But FH and I were talking recently, and he decided that he wants to take MY last name, so now I get to keep it, and he gets to change his =0P

    So I'm excited!

I'm sad about changing my last name too. I'm also going to change my son's last name to his, so it'll be a big change. But in the end, we want all of the children to share the same name.

I keep going back and forth about keeping my maiden name as my middle name as I don't have a middle name. A name change costs $120 $25 new birth certificate... if I just take his, it's free! How is that even right?

Yes, I am! I've had my name for 50 years, so it has been my identity, and I do feel as though a part of me is somehow disappearing. I did feel a need to keep my maiden name, so it has been added to my middle name (I've kept that as well), so I will have 4 names, but will probably only use my first, the middle initials, and my last on official documents.

Not mourning it. I'll have FH's last name that's easier for others to spell and pronounce.

@ Cuteangelfan same here...no middle name. It used to annoy me when I would complete job apps and the person reading it would ask "what it your middle initial"? Dumb azz! LMAO!

That's why I would love to keep the first W. It doesn't even have to be hyphenated, but I want people to know I'm using both "Dubyas".

First off, we are wedding date twinsies! Congrats, and how are you handling all the questions? Second, I was very certain I would take his last name, until about 3 months ago, I will still take his last name, but I've got a very strong bond with my family, and feel like losing my name means I'm not one of them anymore lol, even thought thats so not true, and I know that. But I will take his name, and love being Mrs. Brendel.

STB Mrs.Caissie depending on your state, at least in CA, when you are completing the license you can change your middle name and last name. I assume if you don't have a middle name that you can add a middle name then.

And speaking of funny name combos, a girl at my work named Megan is marrying someone who's last name is Regan... I don't know if she is taking his name or not. Guess I'll know in a couple months. ;-)

It's harder to let go than I had imagined. I easily and quickly chose to change it on the license, but since then I haven't found the motivation to go through the rest of the procedures. I'm going to miss it since it of course reminds me of my dad, y'know.

    Jenny Kenny

    Jenn Doody

Bahhahahaha. Sorry Jenn. I had too throw you in there too. Catch 22, huh?

I always like the idea of taking FH's name, just because it sounds better than mine. Although, I already feel like I'm mutating into him a bit, then with the last name too??? He doesn't care one bit, but I like the idea of having a family with one last name and I don't care for hyphenated names. Its just too much trouble or I'm too lazy. I don't know which. =)

I feel you!!! I feel like the name is part of me, and I've fought hard to be who I am.

Before getting engaged I told myself I would always keep my name but my FH insisted that I take his (pride thing), that and it would make it easier when we have kids. Keeping your maiden name as a middle name is still an option, and I think I might do that as well.

I am excited to take his but on the fence only because I already have a son with my last name. I will feel odd when we are married and my son has a different last name Smiley sad
