Is anyone else sad about changing their name?

Laudie, on May 7, 2013 at 11:40 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 51

So my last name is very unique, Magaziner (yes it sounds like magazine with an R on the end) and I've loved how different it is! My brother is married to someone much older and won't be having kids most likely which means basically we are the last ones from our immediate family to carry the name and that makes me sad :-(...I would keep it but I'm super traditional and FH is also the last guy in his family so we have the pressure of having a boy to carry on his name!

I can't wait until we are married but I'm totally sad this is the last time I'll have my last name haha

Not sad but also not sure I will be changing it. I have a daughter whose last name is the same as mine, which is my maiden name. Have always said I will not change it. I am leaning towards just adding his (no hyphen) to mine.

Ideally I would love for us to both change our names into Marshhouse which is a combo of both our names but he will not even consider it.

Haha D1! When we were in high school we had friends give us a combo name and our last name combines to be Magafro (Magaziner and Renfro)...we always joke about changing it to that but I know that would never happen!

I'm going from Snow to Hess. I'm not really sad about it though.

I'm pretty tired of getting called Snow White, lol.

A little. My last name now is super long and hard to pronounce and I'm going to a three letter last name which will make life easier. But I'll miss the uniqueness of my maiden name (and the Italian part of it).

I'm excited for the "Mr. Rogers" jokes to stop. =) There are so many times you can hear, "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.." before it no longer is a lovely day on the block.

I'm nostalgic, but also excited.. But then, I'm switching to a very unique name, so it's a bit easier.

I'm sorry that it's the last time you'll have it!

I am sad about changing my name. It is really weird, because I don't even like my last name and I'm not close to my dad (where the name came from), but it is weird to suddenly change your name after it has been your identity for 30 years! FH name is very ordinary - I don't really like how ordinary it is, but it is better than my last name (my name is less ordinary but very conducive to jokes). It my career it is very UNcommon for women to change their names, but I'm at an early enough stage in my career that I can, and I like the idea of having the same name as my future kids. I don't like our names hyphenated, so I probably will just change it.

I think part of it is that I don't like the system of the women changing her name. I think we should both change our names - he sees my point, but we aren't going to do this because 1) it is too difficult 2) he wants the same name as his brothers 3) feels his family would be hurt 3) it would get old trying to explain it to people.

I love my last name, Fructuoso. And honestly it sounds much better with my name than with last name Vasquez. Mine is really rare in America and his is so common. When you look at my name you dont know who you're gonna get: a Chinese last name as a first name, a weird last name. With his, you already know it's Spanish. NG Fructuoso is awesome!!! I told him I'm going to hyphenate NG Fructuoso-Vasquez (I've even worked out my new signature. LoL). He's not crazy about it but its either that or I keep my last name. NG Vasquez just sound odd. LoL.

I can't wait to get rid of my last name. Only because its belong to my ex. The only reason I kept it was because of my children.

I was a little sad at first because my last name is the same as my children. FH and I wanted to hyphenate but FH was against it (understandably so since my last name is that of my ex husbands as well but for me it's an association with my children). Anyway, we had a little discussion and it wasn't until I showed him the difference between my name with just his last name with my children vs my name hyphenated along with my children that he could see what I was talking about. B/c he wants me to be happy, he is alright with me keeping a combination of the two. I love him so :-)

I am only sad that I have to wait until November to change my last name :p I'm switching from something that looks funny & no one can pronounce, to a name that is much easier to say and has the same number of letters as both my first and middle names - I'll have 777 Smiley smile

@busybride - It is so strange to have something that defines you for your entire life and then just change it! I think that's why I'm a little sad because I've never been a huge fan of change haha

My last name is unique as well...Pinkney...and it is hilarious because most of the people in my family are women...so my brothers are probably going to be pushing girls... lol . However like you I'm super traditional and will be changing my name

Yes! I’ve been having separation anxiety with my last name…

I want to hyphenate and it wouldn’t be a big deal since FH both have short and easy to pronounce last names but FH isn’t 100 percent on board with me hyphenating.

Ultimately my decision but I completely understand where you’re coming from!

Yea Lindsay I kind of want to hyphenate too but then it's straying from being traditional and it would also make my name really long! I wish I could keep it the same for my professional career but I think it would make life more difficult since my paychecks and insurance would be my maiden name but my social security would be the new one...UGH!

I'm sad and am going to miss mine as well so... I decided to be strange and have two middle names! I'm going to make my current last name my second middle name and be done with it. I don't want to hyphenate but I don't want to give up the names my parents chose for me either so that is what I'm doing.

I'm happy and sad...I won't get any more Charlie's Angels jokes so that's a good thing. (My current last name is Smith and while it's spelled differently I ALWAYS get the Charlie's Angels references) However, I'm one of the last Smiths in our family. My brother didn't have any kids so we're it.

FH is the last Nickel in his family so if we decide to have kids the boy pressure is on us too...

Yes! I can't believe I'm giving up my name in less than two months! It really hit me when my sister got engaged...she's my half sister so we don't have the same last name, and her FH has the same last name as me!! So I'm giving it up and my sister gets it! Makes me pretty jealous haha.
