Is anyone using ferns?

ChampagneDream, on May 17, 2014 at 8:30 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 18

We want to use ferns as the centerpieces for our New Orleans style reception. I am wondering if anyone else is using them. I would certainly hope this will be a cost saver since they're not "flowers" so to speak. Will it be weird to have centerpieces that are totally unrelated to my bouquets?? I would think not, but I need my WW girls opinions!!

Here are some pics.

First is a pic of a french quarter balcony that has served as my inspiration.

Second is a pic of exactly what I'd like our centerpieces to look like. Hopefully the florist will be able to bring this to life!! I'd love all your opinions!!

Ok... done posting for a while... I can't avoid my school work any longer.

Very pretty! We're using ferns for our ceremony decor. I don't think matching your bouquet is really necessary.

I love the balcony. I don't know that the centerpiece will be so inexpensive because it looks like each stem was arranged in one of those styrofoam ball things, and that takes time, and labor costs $$. But ferns grow like weeds, and you have more than a year, so if you have some potting supplies and/or a yard, I bet you could even grow your own and put them in cute pots or DIY these centerpieces.

I didn't use ferns, but I love that type of Fern and think it looks very nice as a centerpiece. It doesn't need to be related to the bouquets. If you like it, go for it! I like it!

We are using ferns as a part of our decor for our outdoor ceremony. They are nice in size, so you don't need a lot or them. They are also very affordable.

I'm using a ton of maidenhair fern but not exclusively. I will say I don't know how much you'll be saving with that particular arrangement because the candelebra is an expensive rental most times. But maybe consider a different tall container (maybe a clear cylinder with curly willow submerged?) or do half tall, half low?

I like ferns, but just be careful. They shed like crazy and can cause a mess!

I plan on using them too. But I was thinking of growing my own or something like that because my aunt is taking care of my flower arrangements and this way we don't have to spend a lot of money. I also say go for them! And I don't think it matters if they match your bouquets; it's pretty much whatever you want to do because it's your wedding.

I wouldn't worry at all about matching your bouquets. I think the fern centerpiece you posted is very cool looking! If you like it, then go for it!

A woman after my own heart, Champagne! I'm also considering using ferns throughout the wedding, and your second photo is one of my inspiration pics. I'm thinking that maybe I'll utilize them lining the aisle during the ceremony like this picture (except ours is on grass, and minus the tiki torches haha). Cost is a definite consideration for me too, but I do agree with Fluffy that our inspiration picture isn't likely a potted fern, so it could be costly. I'm considering alternatives, so let me know if you have any other ideas!

I'm using a few ferns for our ceremony, bought some smaller ones a few months ago and have them hanging under my cedar trees growing them out. I read if you dissolve a birth control pill in the water it helps them grow faster... I was skeptical, but am now a believer. One per gallon of water is what I have been doing. I love your pics of the fern center pieces. Wish you a beautiful wedding!

    I like it.

I think it is fine if the centrepieces aren't the same as your bouquet. I don't think any of the decorations need to match in that sense.

If ferns are what you like then go with it.

Ferns can be beautiful decorations! They are so versatile, too! You can add little lights to create a romantic atmosphere. I agree that they don't have to match your bouquet, but I would encourage something to tie them across the rest of your wedding....whether it is simply some lights, a little ribbon, or a pretty pot/vase that has your wedding colors!

I'm having a tent outdoor wedding by the water in the garden and I've been really looking at having ferns as centerpieces as well.

We are not using ferns for our centerpieces, but we are doing ferns as alter arrangements. Our ceremony is being held outside at a golf club, right in front of a pond. The view is already pretty with lots of flowers, so we are doing simple (and inexpensive) by using boston ferns on pillars.
