Is charging for young kids at a reception normal?

Rane, on August 19, 2010 at 9:24 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

We are having our wedding at a local plantation and we were told we would be charged per head for everyone. That would include our 3 year old nieces and probably our toddler nephews. Is this normal? We do not want to pay full price for kids. I would not mind paying something since they would be there and may eat a little. But we are having a formal dinner for our reception and I seriously doubt kids this young will eat much if any. Is it normal to charge for kids this young?

I think like Brian said, it depends on the venue. Adults at mine cost $120, but the kids are $32.

Our venue is charging us half price for kids. So I guess it's normal.

For ours, a normal plate is $100, including booze. Kid's chicken fingers are $10. For older kids/teens who want the adult food but can't drink yet, it's $50. We keep joking that we're going to have all of our friends order chicken fingers to save lots of money Smiley winking

For ours, kids 5 and under are free. They said once they are past 5 they usually eat more of a meal so they are charged full price. I am ok with that though because we ill have about 8 or 9 freebies Smiley smile

Our venue is handling the plates/linens/chairs. Everything but the centerpeices. I have no problem paying something for them but they are not going to consume as much as an adult. I don't feel it is fair to charge full price for them because of that.

Yes. For dinner under 12 was half price, for the bar under 12 was still half price and then 13 - 20 was like a third off. Infants were free for both and that she left up to us. I have 2 nieces-one just turned 2 and the other will be 2 in a couple months so I counted them both as one

I'm going to see if we can work something out on the price. There are only 6 kids that we really want there, our nieces and nephews. I have a few younger cousins that will probably come but they are 10 and up. (Our nieces and nephews are 6 to 2 years old. 3 of them will be in the wedding.) I'm waiting on a reply from the plantation to see if they'd be willing to work with us on these 6. They just aren't going to eat a lot and they each have 3 sets of Uncles and Aunts and their grandparents who will disciple them if they do not behave. O

The kids are so much fun and they loooooove the dance. l've just always pictured our wedding and reception with them there.

My venue charges the same for kids and adults, which I am NOT happy about it, and they never told me this when I booked, I had to find out AFTER I stupidly booked it and then decided I should probably read their policies. BUT 16 more days and I am done with it lol At least our rehearsal dinner place is charging much less for the kids that will be there!!

Our venue is charging 1/2 price for children. But, Theresa just made me think about the rehearsal dinner, which almost all the children will be at. Need to check on that.

Definitely depends on venue..we are paying full price for kids as young as six months Smiley sad unless we go over our limit (which is 150 people) then kids would be half price...it sucks, but gotta do it..we had few venues, who were giving us 50% off on all children under the age of 12 I think..but we didn't book that venue for other reasons..

Yeah, they got back to me and they aren't going to move on their price for the kids. Ugh. With that attitude I kinda want to make them pack all the leftovers and send them home with our family members. Yeah, I'm liking that idea... even if it is being nit-picky.

Our venue doesn't charge for 3& under. For 4-12 they offer a kids menu at $20 each.

That's $20 each vs. $128 for adults including open bar. I think it's ridiculous for your venue to charge you full price.

Our place is charging a 1/3 of the price for the kids in the bridal party (the only ones there) ages 3 and up. Talk to the manager, and see if they'll negotiate a price. Worst case scenario for my FH and I, if they were going to charge full price, we were willing to eliminate the kids or provide meals in the bridal suite for them with a cousin (uninvited) as a babysitter to save on cost. Good luck!

Definitely ask for a kid's meal for them. Or just don't include them in the count. Most venues plan for more than your guarantee, anyway, although that is a risky strategy.

We save $15 per underage guest (no booze) and kids uner 5 are half-off. This means that we're paying $75 for my nephew to eat six chicken fingers, which drives me insane. However, since it's only one kid, I'm trying not to worry about it. I keep telling myself "in the grand scheme of things..." which is how I ended spending a hundred dollars at the stupid M.A.C. counter today. Grr.
