Is is frowned upon to not buy/wear a wedding band?

Lacey, on July 9, 2019 at 9:59 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 37
My ring has beautiful diamonds on the side of the ring that the wedding bands it matches with (not yet purchased) will cover on on side. I discussed with my mom about not getting a wedding band the day my FH gets his. First she was opposed saying it is tradition and has major significance to your wedding day, but after a minute she didn't see the point of covering up the diamonds for another ring as well! What is everyones thoughts of just keeping ONLY my engagement ring as my marital ring? Also, possibly could get it or change my mind on future anniversary!)

Plenty of people skip the wedding band. Do whatever makes you happy!

My best friend/MOH doesn't have a wedding band. Instead of exchanging rings at their wedding they braided a cross to hang in their house.

If only wear my e-ring! I don’t like the look of two bands. Several of my married friends also just wear one ring. Do as you wish!

You certainly don’t have to wear a ring but have you thought of a simple small band that you might wear separately at some time. Maybe on the beach or at the gym or somewhere you don’t want to wear your diamond?

I agree with PPs - feel free to skip the wedding band if you'd like!

My engagement ring has the same thing with diamonds on all sides of the band (which I love) and also didn't want covered. We were actually able to find a band that went with it and did not cover the side diamonds. It was not the band made for my ring, but it was an alternative, its beautiful and doesnt hide my bling. Just a thought.
To answer your question though, i think its whatever y'all want.

So, I don't want one for similar reasons plus i just got this gorgeous engagement ring why do I need another ring?! What I decided to do was buy a plain band for under 100 dollars that I can swap out for when I don't want to wear my engagement ring but need something there. They have a bunch on Amazon in 14k yellow gold for under 100.

Now that I’m married, i would. And do on occassion wear my wedding band with my e-ring. However, I would never wear my e-ring without my band. A wedding band is more than just another ring to wear. It is a physical representation to the rest of the world that I am joined to my husband. my aunt and uncle don’t wear rings, and i think it’s odd
With that being said, At the end of the day, you get to decide what you want to wear.
but if your husband has a ring, as a guest, I would find it odd that he didn’t give you one. What if you did a plain simple band to use for the ring exchange, then you could wear it during activities you don’t want to wear your w-ring for (swimming, gym, etc)

I actually bought a simple silver band to wear on occasion. Sometimes my e ring and real band dont fit comfortably if my hand is swollen so I'll pop on the cheap one so I still have something there.

I completely agree with that! My mom also said she got a chunky gold band after they were married because they were super active with hiking, watersports, and traveling! I probably will do that! Thank you!

You absolutely do not have to get a wedding band if you don't want one. I am a stickler for the tradition of something indicating your married on your left hand whether something like an e-ring, band, or tattoo.. But it's obviously a personal/marital decision.

Another option for you is to get a simple band customed to your e-ring. While that sounds expensive, I actually found some location where it was under $100 for the customization - you just have to be okay without your e-ring for however long the job takes.

If you want something practical for going hiking or activities, you can also just have a groove. My husband did this for his main wedding band since he is active with his hands, and he didn't want to switch out rings daily.

You don't need to do anything you don't want to do. That being said my mother and I both had our small diamonds fall out of some rings after being active and going through the airport, so I'd reccomend a simple band to wear if you travel or use your hands a lot. You don't want to damage your ring!

I'm considering not getting a wedding band or getting a super cheap one just for the exchange.

I'm in the same boat as you! I have a beautiful design and small diamonds on both sides on my engagement ring! For now, my plan is to get a very thin wedding band from Amazon or Modern Gents (because both would be cheap if it doesn't work out) to see how it looks. if it rubs against my engagement ring, I will probably discuss with FH our options from there. Fingers crossed! Good luck!! Smiley smile

I agree, skip it if you don't want it! I was going to use my engagement ring as my wedding band until my mother offered up my grandmother's wedding ring to use and now I'm using that!

I'm skipping it. FH got me a swarovski band to put on during the ceremony and I'll probably wear it on my right hand afterwards.

Can totally skip if you want! Maybe buy a simple band to exchange day of if you have traditional family. Something super cheap and simple. Then you can wear that when you go on vacations/work out/do a day of gardening, etc. and still keep the exchanging rings tradition if you want to! No one will notice even if you take off the band on the way to the reception if you dont want it in any photos.
