Is it ableist to have a wedding at a converted old asylum?

Charlene, on January 31, 2023 at 11:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

I was doing some late night googling of venues and I noticed one about two and a half hours away from me that is a chapel of an old asylum that was converted into an event center which I found interesting. The rest of the asylum was also converted into a bunch of shops and restaurants and condos and whatnot. I know a lot of people say plantation weddings are racist because of how badly the slaves were treated there in the past and I agree, but what about at an old asylum? Disabled and mentally ill people back in the day when it was an asylum were also treated badly by the doctors and nurses there and given lobotomies and stuff like that.

For the record my fiance has bipolar and I have psychotic depression and ADHD and we both have autism so we probably would have ended up there if we were born a century ago and I initially didn't think it was ableist until I read about the controversy about plantation weddings and a lot of the arguments for why not to have a plantation wedding can also be made for not having a wedding at an old converted asylum.

What are your thoughts?

I would find it a little off putting to go to a wedding celebration in an old asylum/hospital. People spent the worst days of their life there, all the abuse and neglect and now people are going in and stomping around the grounds celebrating a wonderful life and opportunity that the patients would never have gotten.

I would suggest to try and find another venue. A museum or a botanical garden might be nice.

Oh no, I wasn't even planning to have my wedding there regardless since it is a bit too far away for my taste. I just happened to notice it during my initial venue searches and was wondering what people thought of having a wedding there out of curiosity considering the controversy about plantation weddings and this is kind of a similar issue.

I think it's really icky and i'd feel so uncomfortable having a wedding event at a place like that!

I don’t think it would fall under the category of albleism. But I’m sure many people may find it uncomfortable or strange. Others, however, may see it as a positive upcycle- creating something beautiful out of something horrific.

I don't think I could wrap myself around the idea of an asylum being the location for something as positive and optimistic as a wedding.

So, when I go on the wedding website, it doesn't completely scream "asylum" or spooky the venue actually looks nice and it doesn't really use it as a selling point in their advertising (like ooooohhh spooky, have your Halloween wedding here) and on first glance unless you look at the about us page detailing the history, you would have never known it was asylum.

Also, I did research on the asylum, and it looks like it was one of the more humane ones for its time. They avoided using restraints at all costs and the campus had a farm and did vocational rehabilitation stuff. The founder of the hospital had a slogan that "beauty is therapy" and promoted being around nature as healing.

But yeah, none of this matters since it is too far away to have my wedding there and it doesn't really fit my vision.
