Is it ok to book multiple Hmuas?

Mayene, on April 1, 2022 at 4:45 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 7

I'm not a huge makeup and hair person (I like it getting fancy, but I'm just lazy in my daily life) so I've been struggling to hire a makeup artist and hair stylist (I've been looking at those who can do both), and it's weird that this is one of the harder vendors for me to decide on.

I narrowed it down to a few that I really loved in terms of styles, versatility, reviews, and price.

I've been sharing all the links and profiles with my MOH to help me decide and we really like these 2-3 HMUAs. Would it be weird to book more than one artist (one to do my bridal look and one to focus on my bridal party and mom)? There's a few factors here that made me consider it:

1) I don't want my bridal party to have to wake up at the butt crack of dawn just to get ready and have makeup and hair done super early. I want to relieve them of some of that stress, so having a MUA just focus on them and not have to rush to get to me seems like it would be nice. One of my bridesmaids was also in a bridal party last year and I remember her lamenting she had to wake up at 6am because she was first on the schedule to get ready.

2) It would save me some money to split up the work between bride and bridal party work.

3) I want to be able to support multiple people; I really love the work of more than one of them and it would be great to be able to book and tip both women.

For clarity since the title didn't capitalize the acronym, HMUA = hair and makeup artist.

I don't think it would be weird, though definitely check with all makeup artists that you plan on booking. Some of them may require that they are the only makeup artist at the event. If all makeup artists are OK with their being multiple makeup artists there, go ahead and book them!

Also, one other thing to check with them on is if they have a minimum number of services that you have to book them for (for example, they might have a minimum of booking like four people to have their hair/makeup done). They may or may not be willing to book if they are doing hair/makeup for only one person or fewer than their minimum.

Great point, thank you! I know the MUAs we're considering can also bring assistants with them for more hands, though it would be nice to split up responsibility and support. Willing to just go with one or the other though!

I know the MUA I'm looking at for doing my hair and makeup will book with a contract and deposit just for bridal services, so I'll definitely ask the other MUA about minimum services. I know there were a couple MUAs I had reached out to that wouldn't book services for additoinal people without bride-specific services.

Would the HMUA you're considering for yourself be able to provide enough assistants to cover everyone without anyone having to get up super early? If you're cool with hiring multiple vendors then go for it, but it may be easier to coordinate with just the one HMUA.

Many of the artists I looked into actually hire their own team. I only had 6 for hair and makeup and the one I hired brought 2 other HMUAs with her. I thought she was only brining one but I was pleased because it put is ahead of schedule. Just something you might want to ask about.

It really depends. If you go with a company that offers both, you may be required to get both services from them only. Although some offer a la carte services so you can hire them for hair only or makeup only. They also have minimums that must be met. For example, it has to be the bride plus 5 other people and you may not have that many so they will not work with you. Many beauticians on Instagram are independent and have no problem working with other independent beauticians and will bring as many assistants as are needed to get everyone done quickly and efficiently. Some companies will give the bride full attention and barely if at all work on the bridesmaids and others in the group because they are seen as “not important”.

Either way, you need to contact all of your potential vendors before you consider booking anyone. Get a trial done (if they make you book them first, run far away) and ask about service minimums, pricing and how payments are handled (some companies and independents have it listed that even if cash is the method of payment, it must come only from whomever signed the contract).
