Is it possible for a sheath dress to be redesigned to an A-line?

Caroline, on June 12, 2022 at 12:27 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Hi all! My mom has graciously offered her dress (shown below) for me to wear as well as alter however I would like. I love the lace and how it's off-the-shoulders. I might like to make the sleeves shorter and the neckline into a sweetheart but I think that can be done. My main concern is I prefer more of an A-line style on myself, and this dress is a sheath dress. I am guessing fabric would need to be added, but don't know that it would look cohesive. Any advice?

You can always make clothes smaller but you can’t make them bigger.

Yes, a seamstress can definitely make a sheath dress into an A-line. However, they would need to be able to order the exact same fabric the dress is made of, which I think you would run into a problem with. Chances of finding the exact fabric are slim; and even if they did find it, the fabric on your mom‘s dress has likely changed color somewhat over time, so the colors probably wouldn’t match. That being said, it appears as though there is a large, heavy tiered train on the back of the dress and made it a different fabric? (it’s hard to tell from the picture) If that’s the case, and you plan to keep that detail, there may be a possibility of them being able to use a slightly different fabric in the back that would be covered by that train. I would definitely research seamstresses and reach out to a few of the most skilled. Send them lots of pictures of all details on the dress, and see if they think it can be done. You may be surprised, seamstresses can do magic sometimes!

That dress is fire I would leave it as is. But yes a talented seamstress could create a A Line out of that gown but would have to match carefully that fabric. Try Grace Bridal Couture. She only takes 75?brides a year but worth it. Brides all over the world fly in to work with her. She is an artist like no other.

You could create an A-line silhouette with this dress by adding a Tulle overskirt. That is something you could easily try on to see if you like it without permanently altering the dress.

I agree with Grace- I'd look into finding a skirt to go over the dress in tulle or satin; altering a sheath to an A-line isn't very realistic (I worked in bridal for three years and have seen a lot of amazing alterations - fundamentally changing the shape of the dress is not one of them)

I love this idea!!! I think having the overskirt for the ceremony and taking it off for the reception could be perfect!

Thank you so much!! There is a train on the back I’ll likely remove, but now thinking I might replace it with an overskirt for the ceremony!
