Is it possible to have a wedding under 5k!?

Jessica, on July 2, 2017 at 2:21 PM Posted in Planning 1 48

Hey everyone! So I am starting the wedding planning process and to say it's a bit stressful is an understatement. I really would like to enjoy this process, but BOY is it hard to plan a wedding with no money haha! So can someone pleasseee give me just a ton of tips on finding venues, food, music etc for a small budget and small wedding. My biggest fear is that because it's small it's going to be an awkward and not fun wedding. What are fun things we can do during the reception to ensure it's super fun!

Also, what wedding planning books are good investments to help me out? Going by Barnes and Noble today and really want to buy one! (but of course, within budget Smiley winking)

Last thing, anyone know of any great venues, caterers in the Knoxville, Chatanooga, and tri-city areas?

EDIT: 50 people or less will be attending

How small is small? Guest list size is the number one thing we need in order to answer your question.

My budget is 7k and it's looking very doable right now for 50 people. How many are you expecting?

Your ability to host a fun wedding on $5k is going to be dependent upon the number of people you hope to invite.

Completely doable under 5K. Consider a very limited guest list. City Hall followed by a reception at a restaurant for 20-30 people.

We have 100 people and our entire venue, food, alcohol, wedding coordinator, decorations, ceremony, etc... is UNDER 5k!... you just have to know how to shop around

It is definitely going to be less than 50 people. 50 is just and ABSOLUTE max number. and I can probably work with $5000-$7000 realistically

Planning a wedding on a limited budget does indeed seem like an impossible task but I think if you're savvy enough you can get away with it. Our budget is the main reason why my FH and I set a wedding date for 2020. It gives us time to save and plan. And who knows, maybe our financial situation will change for the better between now and then.

As for planners, The Knot planner seems to be super popular for good reason. There is a built colour palette for you to choose your theme colours and each section is thoroughly thought out with room for even the smallest details. At $20 it's worth it but you can get other less detailed planners for up to half the price on Amazon.

Our budget is 5k. It's doable but you really have to think small.

We are having 35 people but we know it's going to be a lot of fun.

Keep your guest list under 50 try even under 30.

Seems like your in Tenessee and I am sure that means a lot of places do good BBQ. BBQ is going to be an inexpensive catering choice.

Skip small things like programs. Menu cards. Favors. And even save the dates.

Look at places that aren't typical venues. Restaurants are a good place especially if they have a cute little patio area.

    Look into AirBnB.

Please please please do not do self catering, BYOB, friendors, cash bars ect.

You have to stay small and that's your biggest thing.

That budget is fine as long as you aren't expecting to host 200 people for 4 course meal on a Saturday in June.

Keep your guest list as small as possible. Have your wedding on a Friday or Sunday during the off season (usually January through March). Do brunch instead of dinner. Prioritize your funds on things that will improve the "fun" factor (e.g. food, booze, music) and spend less on things that don't (e.g. fancy venue, designer dress, tons of decor, upgraded linens). I recommend these books: Bridal Bargains: Secrets To Planning A Fantastic Wedding on a Realistic Budget and A Practical Wedding.

    Happy planning!

So for people who are having smaller weddings, is it awkward to have dancing with such a small number of people? If so, what do you do besides dancing that is fun!?

You can absolutely do it, considering your guest list is low. Venue & Catering are usually the most expensive items. Try looking at VFW's, or community centers. If your military, American Legions are usually free. ;-)

We are looking at a 30-40 people wedding and still plan to have dancing. I think it depends on the crowd. Our budget is about 10k but we aren't doing bare minimum so certain things.

Yes, but not a large wedding (about 40 people) and not a traditional Saturday-evening-in-a-banquet-hall wedding.

Its possible with a small guest list. We started out at 5k with 80p and that was 5k for EVERYTHING. we are now around 9k including the honeymoon. Oh and our guest is went up to about 100.

@Jessica, 50 people isn't small. Adjust your guest list and you'll have better luck. For a truly small wedding, think 10-30 people. That's doable and even then, you'll have to make other sacrifices when it comes to flowers, photographer, wardrobe, etc.

@FutureMrsHahn how are you doing a 100-person wedding under 5K? I'm scared to ask.

Its absolutely doable. Keep your guest list small, shop around and plan on DIY. For catering, I agree with other posts of looking into Italian or BBQ. Look on Amazon for the knot wedding planner, between that and WW, it's all I've been using.

I have 57 people and my budget is 5500... i cut all unnecessary stuff... to me that is... programs, menus, favors, flowers and bridal party.

I found a venue that allows me to buy my own alcohol and soda and bring it in. Plus I am having it in a friday night.

YES. But you need to prioritize. The only things you in IMHO is an officiant to marry you, your close friends and IMMEDIATE family, and enough booze and food for them. Totally doable in a backyard with an ipod and party.
