Is it too late for me to send "save the Dates"?

Michelle, on December 28, 2021 at 1:04 PM Posted in Planning 1 18

Howdy y'all!

My fiancé and I are getting married on May 21, 2022 (approximately 5 months away). I am in my last year of studying chemical engineering and so I was extremely busy during the semester with that, and unable to get any wedding planning done.

Should I skip "Save the Date" cards and only do invitations? I was also thinking of doing digital "Save the Dates" so people could receive those a lot faster and start planning ahead (about 40% of our guest list is from out of town).

Please let me know what y'all think or if y'all went through something similar! I'd love some advice or tips to help me decide what to do.

Thank you!

It’s definitely not too late to send out save the dates, but I wouldn’t wait any longer! I would definitely suggest sending STDs ASAP since a large portion of your guests are out of town, and will need ample time to plan.

Hi Michelle! I was in the same boat. I’m in school too, getting married in April and just sent the save the dates out about 4 weeks ago (via regular mail, not digital). Definitely worth doing! Several guests already booked their hotel rooms too. We are sending invites out next month.

If you don't mind me asking: where did you get your save the dates printed? And how long did the process take from picking out your design to having them sent to guests?

Definitely not too late, but like the previous comments said, if you decide to send them, I would make that your next task to focus on! Sending them virtually is a good option, or you can mail them out. That way, your guests will have plenty of time to make travel arrangements.

Hi Michelle! I did save the dates virtually (my wedding is in April 2022). It has helped so much. 76 of 200 guests have already RSVPd online and I sent mine a month ago through Paperless Post. I think it cost me under 50 to send them to everyone. I designed my own save the date so it saved on each card. I attached an RSVP link to save the date which brought my guests to my wedding wire website where I uploaded my guest list. The guests typed in their name and RSVP'd. It's been fairly easy!

Zazzle Has very expensive STDs, and they often times run sales. Once you have finalized your design and placed the order, they are usually delivered within a week.

Great questions! I ordered them through Walmart...by that point most of the common websites that have Save the Dates would have taken a week or two to print. Walmart took 2-3 days and I was able to upload our design to their website and have it printed just like we wanted. Once they arrived, my parents and I set aside the next afternoon to address all of them and I mailed them that day. So, altogether, I would say 5 days from picking the design, selecting Walmart, getting them printed and shipped and mailed. Hope this helps!

One more thing...through Walmart, my STDs were 77 cents apiece, including the envelope with the return address printed on the back. I couldn't find a price that low anywhere!

I got mine from Zazzle! They were $155.44 (including shipping) for 100 Save the Dates and blank envelopes. I got the 4.5" x 6.25" and they were the perfect size and great quality! I used matte paper and got rounded edges (the rounded edges made them slightly more expensive, but nothing crazy). The shipping cost was $16.36 which I thought was insane, but oh well

I am just about to send out my STD's as well! I'm planning on sending them out via regular mail and adding a facebook group as well as it may help people get it sooner. I got mine from Shutterfly and it took about a week but only because I did it a few days before Christmas! We're getting married May 28, 2022. I don't know about most people but I'm sentimental and love to keep all my cards which is why I'm choosing to do it through regular mail. I think mine were around $180 for 100 STD with envelopes and I got mail stickers for us so that I don't have to write it on everything!

I would send an email “Save the Date” and follow up with formal invitation.

We are ordering our save the date magnets from magnet street. They always have a 75% off sale and are great quality. We are getting 100 save the date 3.5”x4” magnets and guest and return addressing for $102. The also have regular paper save the dates and invitations.

Hi there! Click on the word "guests" at the top. Then when you find a guest, click on their name. Under the person's name you'll see a section that says "additional guest." type in the person's first and last name and it will link them on the guest list.

I uploaded my entire guest list at first by using the excel sheet the wedding wire provides. but you can also manually input your guests.

It’s absolutely not too late to send save the date cards, and I would definitely recommend doing so, because it’s for sure too early to send wedding invitations. Like others have said below, you should order them as soon as possible, because according to this timeline, they should be sent out anywhere from 6-12 months prior to your wedding, and you are just at 6 months now: https://www.magnetstreet.com/wedding-stationery-timeline

You are going to want to order them ASAP, and I would recommend going through MagnetStreet, who I used for all of my wedding stationary. The entire process couldn’t have been any easier, and since you are extremely busy with school, you don’t need any added stress. It only takes about a week for you to get them sent out to you, so if you order them now, you’ll be able to send them out in no time.

We are getting married May 29. In a out of state venue 2hrs away about half of guest are from out of town and the other half from where I lives we decided to make a wedding happen for May in oct and as soon as we signed a venue contract first week of December I had save the dates out asap. Since you have a high percentage of out of town guests I would say send them asap. You can send paper ones out to the older guests who maybe are less likely to go online and online ones for those more modern times.

Can you call the people on your guest list? It’s a bit late to send postcards or magnets but phone calls are free and efficient with plenty of time for them to make arrangements before the invites are sent at 6-& weeks before the wedding. Also anyone who is older is already used to phone save the dates. Contrary to popular belief, save the dates should be sent to all guests because local guests have just as high likelihood to have difficulty getting time off on the drop of a hat without the same advance notice as out of the area guests.
