Is she a maid or a matron?

Marie, on November 16, 2021 at 7:20 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

Hey there! My MOH-to-be is not currently married, her wedding date is 2 months before mine. I am planning to propose soon, and also planning on doing a "get to know the bridal party" collage, but I don't know if I should be making things that say "maid of honor" or "matron of honor." Thanks!!

I would ask her which term she prefers. Sure, "matron" is technically correct once one is married, but that is so old fashioned and sexist (men's titles don't change based on their marital status) so she may hate it.

She will be a maid of honor while she’s single and a matron after she marries.

Since her wedding date is before yours, she will be a matron of honor.

Matron, she WILL be married at your wedding even if she isn't currently.

Just my opinion, but matron of honor sounds a little old fashioned and outdated. I would ask her if she prefers one term over the other moving forward because she might have a strong opinion one way or the other.

The argument for being married makes you a matron also doesn’t change how we call brides*maids* (of mine, half were married).
