Is there anyone out there that can do a dairy free wedding cake?

Natasha, on October 15, 2014 at 1:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

I seriously need help! I have contacted several bakeries that either claim to be dairy free on weddingwire or on their website. My fiance is severely lactose intolerant so this is not by choice.

We even went in for a complimentary tasting (after several emails during which one of the vendors confirmed they can provide a 100% lactose free wedding cake) at which point we were told that they can not do dairy free buttercream (the outer layer of a wedding cake).

Another bakery said they can do dairy free buttercream but it will not hold the fondant. We are OK with that but we do want a buttercream layer to cover the cake. We found one bakery that claimed they can do it though it will be rustic looking (not smooth). At this point we really don't care. We just need a professional wedding cake. We wanted to book them via email but that's when we were told they are closed on Mother's Day (our wedding day). I have searched within a 100mile radius and I'm at a loss... Please help...

We have several bakeries in the area that do Vegan baked goods. They also do gluten free, peanut free etc. Try looking for a vegan baker or a gluten free baker. They would be your best source for dairy free cake and icing.

This is the Facebook page of a place near here. Virago bakery. The photos they have are posted on their FB page. The top post has a wedding cake with what looks like fondant to me. I know they are not in your area, but I wanted to show you what sort of things can be done.

Too bad you are having trouble because a dairy free should be easy!

What about doing a naked cake? They are really trendy right now. ...since I can't attach images, just Google "naked cake" to see what they look like.

I found a bakery that specifically catered to dietary restrictions (nut-free, egg-free, gluten-free, etc.). When I had my consultation with them, the first thing they asked was what allergies we were working with. They're also very careful to ensure there's no cross-contamination; they take allergies very seriously. I think a bakery like that is what you want, rather than a regular bakery that is just trying to accommodate your FH's allergy.

I thought about naked cakes and even cupcakes which can easily be made dairy free. FH likes a traditional wedding cake so I'll keep searching...

I have contacted every lactose free/gluten free/vegan bakery within a 100mile radius. One of the things that surprised me (other than the no dairy free buttercream) is that they would only have two flavor options. One had only carrot cake or banana :-/

Can you do something other than cake? A few pies instead maybe? Or a rice crispy treat "cake"?

If they delivered it the day before- would your vendor be able to keep it somewhere so its fresh the next day? How big of a cake are you planning?

Thank you for the ideas ladies. I'll see if the one bakery which claims they can do it, can deliver the day before. Heidi are you near Jacksonville FL? If you are, Sweet N Flour, Choux Cake Studio and Simply Delicious Cakes offer gluten free options. Hopefully, they have a variety of flavors to choose from.

Another option would be to make a pavlova layered cake with coconut milk whip cream between layers with berries.
