Is this too cheesy?? Musical Theatre nerds I need input! First Dance song

Brandy, on January 6, 2016 at 9:29 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

My FH and I are both "theatre people". We met doing a production of "Rent" in 2014 (he played Collins and I played Mimi). The show was a once in a lifetime experience, and we met so many amazing people doing it, three of which are in our bridal party Smiley smile

My question is: how cheesy is it to use "Seasons of Love" from Rent as our first dance song? It was an idea I had but I'm trying to avoid an "eye roll" reaction from guests, even if they're just teasing hahaha. I figure most guests wouldn't care/ probably haven't heard the song but I just wanted some feedback. Thanks for any input!

I say go for it...although I'm not one to talk about avoiding the "cheese." My question more-so is that I have a hard time seeing this as a song I could dance to?

I think it's totally fine to use but it's not very romantic. What about a different song that is more about a man and a woman?

Or what about using Seasons of Love to walk down the aisle?

It's a beautiful song, but, as a theatre nerd myself, it makes me weep when I hear it. It's not really a "happy" song and a wedding is a happy occasion.

Keeping that in mind, The Rose is a popular wedding song, but every time I hear it I think of Bette Midler's character dying at the end of the movie.

Music is personal both to you and your partner, but also to the people around you. Keep that in mind when picking your music.

I think that's adorable! The song means something to the both of you. You should go for it!

The 1st dance is about your and your FH. Most of your guest won't even remember it after the wedding. Do what ever feels right for the 2 of year. IMO your guest won't care either way.

I was thinking of "I Could Have Danced all Night," from "My Fair Lady," because I played Maid1/2 and sang it in the trio with Eliza Doolittle. In the end we settled with "At Last."

I agree with PP that I love the idea of you doing a song from a musical but that particular one doesn't give me the happy in love feelings I associate with a first dance. But I definitely don't think it's too cheesy!

If that songs means a lot to both of you, then go for it! The first dance song is about you two.

That being said, I've always thought of philía love when it comes to Seasons of Love, not necessarily éros. It seems to me a celebration of friendship and camaraderie, not necessarily romantic love. But, again, it's your first dance. If you see it as romantic, then go for it!

I don't think the 'musical theatre' theme is cheesy, but personally, I hate that musical, and while I don't hate that song, I have suggested it for funerals. It's beautiful, but it truly is sad.

Maybe your officiant could work in some quotes from the show? "Seasons of Love" is a perfect little phrase.

I have zero advice, but bumping this thread because there are a few theatre-loving WW members that I'm sure will have great advice here.

Go for it! I don't remember what most people dance their first song to. But you will remember that it was your first song.

I don't think it's a first dance song even kind of, ha.

I know you were Mimi and he was Roger, but why not "I'll Cover You"?

    More fitting, slightly upbeat too.

    I agree with @m.

You'd also have to figure out a good way to cut down "Seasons of Love" cause it is LONG. I think it gets awkward when first dance songs are much more than a minute and a half. Personally, "Seasons of Love" reminds me of high school chorus. But you should use whatever song feels the most fitting to you! It really doesn't matter how other people feel about the song if you love it.

I think it's a little slow for a first dance. I choreographed it for a show choir and they swayed during the song (middle school), and the sway was super slow...

I agree with m above for I'll cover you. I personally love "Without You".
