Is your spouse like their parent? Are you? (funny convos with my Mil)

Rebecca, on January 31, 2020 at 3:27 AM Posted in Married Life 0 13

The longer I've been with DH, the more my MIL talks to me about FIL. And the more I realize... watching FIL is like watching the future.

After dinner tonight, we all sit down to chat in the living room. FIL slowly falls asleep. DH is holding it together, but when his dad woke up to deal with some business in the other room, DH lay down on the floor... and started to fall asleep. I tell him to sit up, and he says he's "fine". MIL *cackles* with laughter, and tells him he's just like his dad - can't stay awake, and that FIL does this *all the time*.

This is after she complained, over the holidays, of FIL taking dish towels as he cooks... and leaving them all over the house. (...Do you know where I find dish towels? NOT IN THE KITCHEN.)

And there's the part where Wife has to repeat what she said five times, because someone wasn't actually listening...

Today, I simply said, not only did the apple not fall far from the tree, I actually think it got stuck on a branch halfway down. MIL howled with laughter.

(To be completely and utterly fair, I am my father's daughter, which has sometimes scared DH and my stepmother, annoyed the everloving heck out of them, or bemused them completely.)

Anyone else experiencing this, the more they get into married life?

While I know nothing about my FH's family (not close, father died when he was a child, etc.) he claims that I am exactly like my mother, which is TERRIFYING!!!!

I definitely catch some similarities sometimes. I also notice a lot of similarities between my wife and her siblings.

We've been married 32+ years, we are both VERY much like our parents.... I like to think it's in all the best possible ways. And, yes, it's already quite clear our 25 year old daughter is just like us. Smiley heart

My FH is VERY much like his father. Not all of it is great, but he recognizes that and is trying to change those areas (of his own accord I am in no way making him)

Lol, so my husband has always been into pop music and a lot of stereotypically girly singers/bands (like he unironically loves Taylor swift, one direction, etc) and I just thought that was so funny when I met him and he’s this 21 year old man who genuinely listens to bands like that...... then about 6 months into our relationship (we live across the country from his family so we were already pretty serious by the time I flew there and met his parents) I met his dad, the 57 year old man who, when “story of us” by Taylor swift came on in the car, knew EVERY SINGLE LYRIC. I just started cracking up and my husband asked what was so funny and I’m like “every question I had about why you are the way you are was just answered” 😂

As for me, one day a couple years ago we were at my mom’s house and it was snowing (not a blizzard or anything, but like it was sticking pretty significantly) and I was craving a latte from Starbucks which is only like 5 mins down the road so my husband said he’d go get coffee for the family, and I followed him to the door and while he was getting his shoes/coat on I was saying “remember just because the road doesn’t LOOK icy doesn’t mean it isn’t. Go at least 5-10mph under the speed limit, and if you skid, steer into the skid and pump the breaks. Be VERY careful, I love you.” And when I turned around my mom was just standing there with her mouth wide open in shock and was like “oh my god you sound like ME” hahaha.

Oh, I'm my mother's daughter. Goofy usually, boisterous, fun loving, jokester who loves to buy things for loved ones and knows just the right gift usually. My FH said watching my mom was like seeing the future with me, and he was even more sure about putting a ring on my finger. It's also funny that he's a lot like my stepdad, down to a love of metal and a darker sense of humor.

My FH is a copy of his dad. Listening to his dad is like listening to an older version of my fh, except my FH embraced the compassion and love from his mom. Unlike his dad, he wears his heart on his sleeve and is often too hard on himself. But listening to my future father in law gripe about traffic was definitely like a copy of my fh.

My FH is actually more like my own father than his! Which is pretty odd, and neither of them will admit they see it even though everyone else can.

They're twins. I can see exactly what FH will look like when he's 75. FMIL pulled out an album the first time I met her and showed me photos of FFIL when he was young and if he and FH weren't the same person I seriously couldn't tell. They have the same mannerisms. FFIL loves snacking on dry crackers - like a whole sleeve of Saltines. Guess who also does that? And they both enjoy the same sports and will fall asleep watching golf, claiming they love it, but they always fall asleep watching it. They're both cranky. They don't like to have fun. They don't like dealing with money/bills. LOL. I'm basically marrying my FFIL.

I'm (luckily) not much like my mom, but occasionally I'll do or say something and FH will tell me, "You sound just like your mother" and then I have to deny, deny, deny!! Smiley laugh

If I didn't know any better, I would think FH and FFIL were twins, right down to their dimples. They sit the same on the couch, love sports, and help us girls out with anything we need. FH denies it every time. But FMIL and I both tell him what he has to look forward to. I used to be just like my mom, but now not so much.

Oh gosh - I do notice that H sits and watches TV just like his dad and some of his facial expressions are the same but I hope and pray his not like my FIL in other ways. My FIL cheated on my MIL when they were married not once not twice but at least 10 times. He is very nice to me & my H has gotten over a lot of it, but he still gets no respect when it comes to his cheating past.
