So I've gone to countless doctors and they've all sworn you cannot gain weight due to a IUD. I'm so terrified to get on the pill due to weight gain, acne, and well it not being as effective as an IUD. Any one else experience weight gain with an IUD?

I did a little experiment with myself, I was always skinny weight 110lbs even during pregnancies I have three children and I never had any weight issues. Then I got on the depo and gained weight, then I lost it after I stopped taking it. Then got on the implant birth control and within 6 months gained weight not matter what I did I ran everyday 5 miles and eat healthy and went to the gym 6 times a week my weight wouldn't budge, then took off the implant and all of it just shed off to the point people thought I was starving myself. Then I got on skyla gain 30lbs within a year with diet and exercise, I am going to have it removed and I also noticed my blood pressure changed to a higher level on these birth controls. I told the doctor and she said its not the birth control that's making me gain weight. I refuse to believe that you can gain 30 lbs. and eating healthy and excising doesn't make any sense. I believe the level of hormones is the reaction because your body produces a certain amount that is healthy raising those levels via birth control can be the associated with weight gain and retention that's my theory.

So the weight goes away eventually? How long did it take you? I for my Mirena Feb. 16th and I’ve gained 12 pounds since then. I’m very active due to my job, I work 60 hours a week on my feet and only get one day off to do anything for myself and even then I’m on my feet. My appetite has been suppressed from it so I don’t eat much.

I know this is an old post but I had my IUD in for 4 years and gained 125 pounds. I changed everything to try to loose weight in those 4 years but kept gaining instead with the doctors just telling me to "eat less, exercise more". I only eat lean meat (no red), quit eating out so often, moved away from fried foods, don't buy sweets or chips anymore, and changed my whole diet. I even joined the gym and tried walking and biking until my back got messed up and I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and sciatica on my left side. Nothing worked and the weight just kept coming on. I had the IUD removed in 2019 and went back to having abnormal monthly cycles and ended up back in the doctors office because of the over bleeding. He removed the IUD and I found I had polyps in my uterus. Had a DNC to remove those in January of 2020. I have now lost 30 pounds and haven't changed anything about my diet or exercise routine. I kept getting told that the IUD didn't cause it but nothing else makes sense as to how I gained that much weight in 4 years with it and have now lost weight without it.

A change in hormones can cause weight gain, it may have a effect on your metabolism. So I would do my research first before saying that inserting a hormonal IUD into the cervix would not cause weight gain, it may not be direct but it may indirectly cause weight gain with the change on hormone levels in the body.

I had always been thin and had a fast metabolism but i got my mirena in and within 5 MONTHS i had gained 50 pounds, as soon as i got it out my weight stabilized but i have still not been able to get it off. literally WORST mistake of my life! i definitely think it causes weight loss considering i could eat whatever junk i wanted without gaining before the mirena.
