"I've never been to an engineer wedding"

NotAllWhoWanderAreLost, on July 2, 2015 at 12:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 38

FH and I are both engineers. And people keep asking us the most random questions and prefacing it with "I've never been to an engineer wedding".

WTF is that supposed to mean? I don't know how to respond to this statement anymore, the first few times I just laughed and said "so you aren't used to having fun" but now I am not sure if there is some stereotype I am not aware of that keeps making different people tell us that?

It's been everything from "do I have to button my suit jacket" (I don't care if they are even wearing one we are getting married in August....) to "do you mind if I bring my GF?" (Yes... her name was listed on the invitation?)

Has anyone had anything similar?

Also, a picture. Because I swear I am not making this up.

IDK, on one hand, i want to say that that's bizarre.... but on the other, I went to a software engineer's wedding last year and it was fairly unusual. Like, instead of asking if anyone had any reason to object to the union, they asked if anyone would like to throw a saving roll against the union and like 3 or 4 people rolled giant foam D20's up the aisle. If you aren't a nerd, that would have been completely baffling.

Engineers have a reputation of being "odd" and thinking "differently" than others (DH is an engineer), I don't think it was necessarily meant to mean.

I'm mean I wouldn't say that we aren't nerds... we definitely are. But we are also fairly normal people. We don't LARP or play D&D, there are no D20's at the wedding, no one is wearing weird costumes. We are going to drink, dance and have a good time. You know... like a normal wedding or something (IDK do normal weddings exist anymore?)

My mom is super traditional and keeps calling me to tell me about all the "wedding rules" and the traditions I have to make sure are still there.... so yea even if I wanted something crazy it really wouldn't happen, but I don't. We are getting married at an estate, I think the weirdest things about our wedding is that we have stein's to toast out of and will be setting up giant jenga.

My guess is the stereotypes that we don't like social events?

I'm an engineer and no one's said anything to me yet.

Huh? An engineer wedding? Is that a thing? Engineers have a reputation for being a bit antisocial and introverted. Funny thing all of the engineers I know are a blast and totally normal people. I think you have an oddball on your hands here date twin.

Haha...I'm not aware of any stereotypes except maybe for being introverted/reserved. I hope you just shrug it off and think it's funny, because it's something you can look back on and laugh about!

Lol. Our entire group of friends works in a chemical plant. Most are chemical engineers, scattered with some statisticians and chemists. I thought it was really clever that the hashtag of the wedding was their last name and Chemistry. (#______Chemistry) I've also seen name tags with the element components on them.

I will agree most engineers are introverts. And I definitely can be, but FH is NOT at all we regularly (maybe once a month or so) have house parties with upwards of 30 people, and play drinking games all night (who said that was only for college?)

We are having a large wedding and everyone coming knows us and that we like to have a good time and are well organized but also pretty laid back.

FH is an engineer and we haven't gotten any comments like that but he's also none of the above mentioned stereotypes. I think it's weird that they're asking you that. lol

Haha yeah. I wonder if it's because you're both engineers? Like, if you were both doctors would you get the same response? It's weird, lol.

I'm the only female engineer in my team of 17. They are all great and fun but nerdy. They love Star Wars and Trek. They can recite every movie line. One builds robots and one shoots off rockets...I'm not like that at all. The only common denominator is everyone likes a good party; take it as a compliment!

NotAllWhoWander - That sounds like our group! Do you guys play board games? We have board game nights every other Saturday in the winter (because Ohio is dark and dreary and depressing...). We are a big drinking crowd. And because most are chemical engineers, almost all of them brew their own beer and wine. We have huge Halloween and Christmas parties in our group, that have more than 40 people that come.

My husband and I are both engineers and we get comments like that all the time (though not from most people since we mostly associate with other engineers). For my 32nd birthday, I threw a party and bought a cake with "Happy 10000 birthday!" on it (32 in binary). We're weird lol.

Sighz, maybe I will just chalk it up to people being weird!

It just strikes me as something so weird to say, like if I was going to a wedding of two teachers I would just ask them a question about the wedding if I had one, I wouldn't also add "I've never been to a teacher wedding before" because why does their profession matter?

FH works for an engineering company and for some reason his co-workers (who are mostly engineers) thought the wedding would be extremely fancy and black tie formal.

This is just weird to ask, I can't imagine. That said, I've been getting a heap of weird questions now that my invites are out as well!
