Ivory vs. White

Maricle2Be, on December 4, 2015 at 2:28 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

So I'm looking at linens since we are planning on just buying them online. Our colors are royal blue, white, and sunflower gold/yellow. I was planning on doing an ivory tablecloth with a royal blue table runner, but all the sites show ivory as having more of a yellow tint to them. As much as yellow is technically an accent color of ours, I don't want yellow-white tablecloths. Does anyone have some suggestions on whether ivory tends to actually look like the picture, or does it appear as a more white color?

My wedding dress is ivory, but looks white (no yellow undertones). I think it depends on the particular fabric used. I've seen ivory with and without yellow undertones. I don't have any direct experience with linens though.

I have seen various versions of ivory, sometimes they have a yellow tint whereas others don't. I would recommend visiting the table linen place in person and see for yourself what their version of ivory is.

I do think it depends on the vendor. I bought my ivory table cloths from linentablecloth.com, and they were definitely a yellow ivory.

Why don't you just order white tablecloths?

"Ivory" can vary depending on the company. I saw dresses that ranged from what I could barely tell apart from white to almost butter. It also makes a difference if there is pure white near it. I tried on several dresses I would have sworn were white until I saw a pure white next to them.

You won't know for sure unless you can get a swatch. Even then, keep in mind that it will likely look different in various lighting conditions.

It also depends on your dress. Try to get a swatch of your dress and a swatch of your linens. My coordinator told me that you want to be the "whitest white" in the room. If your linens are super white and your dress is ivory, then the dress will look dingy.

@Kim0423, that was one of the sites I was looking at, so thanks! I don't think I'll go with them then.

@FutureMrsBrbr none of the places are near me, I'd half to travel halfway around the country

@Rosie9615, I was hoping to go for a softer look that ivory offered, but white is looking like it might be my best bet...

@Annemarie, that's really helpful. My dress is a "soft white" so I will definitely just have to compare those

I think I'm going to have to go with white. All of the sites that I've been looking at don't offer samples of the fabric (stupid, I know). I really don't want to get stuck with butter/cream colored tablecloths. I think the white is going to just be the safest bet...

I had all ivory at my wedding but it all looked white to me. It really depends on the brand, but from my experience ivory has looked white.

Your colors are very similar to what mine were. One thing to keep in mind when wearing a dress that isn't quite white is that the color difference between white and any off shoot of white shows big time in pics. Your dress will look almost dingy next to white linens. It will be fine in person, but you will see it in pics later. My dress is ivory and based on our this fun fact from our consultant, we went with cream linens.

Here's my non-pro BAM so you can see how well the cream blended with the royal blue, yellow, and oranges that we used: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/hey-guys-were-married-bam-bam-bam-non-pro-found-more-pics-on-pages/34b9fe867c430222.html

@NenaBear - THANK YOU!! That really helped a lot. I was worried that if the ivory looked cream, that it would look bad with the royal blue. But this was more reassuring than I could possibly explain!

To be honest, it really only matters if your wedding reception is in broad daylight. If you are having lunch or outdoor garden wedding then you will see a difference between pure white and ivory. But if you are in the evening and the lights are dimmed, you will not notice any difference~
