My FH and I have been together almost 6 years and already have our house and 2 kids.. At first he was totally against me having a bridal shower because he says we dont need anything. I understand but most of my girlfriends wanted to do it anyway. Personally, Id rather have people just give us money than gifts, since im already over budget on the wedding and we are paying for it all ourselves.

One of my bridesmaids suggested doing a Jack and Jill and doing a raffle. Everyone brings a random gift (wine, gift basket, etc.) and we raffle them off.... or just do cash donations...

Anyone done something similar.. were looking for ideas.

For those of you who don't know what a jack n jill is...it's to help the bride and groom raise money for their wedding/ honeymoon! Im having one next weekend and me and my fiance are buying drinks, food and games. Our bridal party is also helping out with raffles, plates, utensils, etc... We sold our tickets for 1 for $15 and 2 for $25. I've been to other ones where the tickets are way more expensive. but i figure the less the tickets the more you'll be able to sell. We are also doing beer pong tournaments and poker tournaments! We have horshoes, ladder ball and corn hole a.k.a. bean bag toss! So do it up whatever you want!

Im sorry but here in MA we do Jack and Jills all the time. The way it works here is the wedding party donates gifts for raffle. Then the bride and groom pay for the venue, food, and DJ. Then the wedding party sells tickets to the event to their friends or to anyone who wants to come and obviously friends and family of the bride and groom are also welcome to purchase tickets if they want. The tickets are usually sold $20 pp or $35 for a couple. Then at the event raffle items are put on display and people are encouraged to purchase tickets for these items. Since the tickets for the event are purchased ahead of time people don't usually have any quams about buying raffle tickets. Then from there its just a party you dance, drink , eat and enjoy everyones company.

I also think its very egocentric of some to have such harsh opinions of people who decide to have a jack and jill. If you don't like the idea... don't do it!

So girl do you!!! Its a great way to get that bit of extra cash

I actually created an account just to reference the people that call a Jack n Jill TACKY!.. In todays society the typical parent paid for wedding is long gone... in todays world most have to pay it for it themselves.. with that said a Jack n Jill is a great and fun way to help the engaged couple through some financial tough times... it's Not a charity.. an actual invite goes out and you can choose or not to choose to participate. Most Weddings cost between 10-15k dollars and with all the companies and vendors charging an arm and leg most couples need help. On top of that, most venues charge per plate.. so in our case we found a semi sorta discounted venue that charges 130 per plate. You invite 100 people and you're already at 13k not to mention the DJ, flowers, the rings, the cake and all the other associated costs. SO to say that it's tacky is just ridiculous. Don't be so quick to judge!

Well said Mike! We did our Jack n Jill in October, and it was great! live band, tons of food (people thought we had it catered... didn't. just spent a lot of time in the kitchen... lol), drinks, games, and a bounce house for the kids. People loved it! so many raffle prizes that people didn't know which bin to put their tickets in! If my wedding reception is half as much fun as our jack n jill was, i'll be a happy camper Smiley smile
