Jamaica customs/immigration

Barbara, on January 13, 2017 at 7:43 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 20

Looking for some info from those out there that have been to Jamaica. I've been looking for a list of things you can't take into Jamaica. We have a list online of things we can't take on planes, so just wondering if it's all the same or not. Also what do they do there? I heard they literally go through all your belongings. Not that I have anything to hide, but isn't that a little drastic considering all my belongings already went through metal detectors? Also, I read somewhere I have to have a certificate of registration to take cameras, laptops, etc. Is this true?

I've never had to have a cert nor have I ever been searched. I've been to Jamaica at least 4 times.

Yea, they want to make sure you aren't bringing things into the country that are prohibited like prescriptions that aren't in your name or other drugs etc

I haven't been to Jamaica but have been to other Caribbean countries, and some don't allow civilians to wear camouflage clothing or accessories- if you guys have any stuff like that, you may want to see if that's a problem there. I was glad I randomly found out about this before our last cruise because my dude lives in camouflage shorts, lol.

We just got back from jamaica on December 10. Never got searched (none of the people who got off our plane got searched), didn't need any certificate for our camera. Also, super easy process. We flew into montego bay, they had us come to passport kiosks to get our picture taken, then collected our luggage and that was it. Saw one guy get searched on the way back flying out of Jamaica. His stuff all was taken out of the bag and looked through. But he did look sketchy with many little bags and carry ons

You seem suspiciously concerned about them searching your bags...

We went to Jamaica in September, no one even glanced at our bags. We were through customs in less than 15 minutes.

I know DF has never had issues and he's been to Jamaica many, many, many times.

We went to Mexico in May and had zero issues. I did find out right before we left that I couldn't take Sudafed (behind the counter kind) with me because it is a controlled substance down there. Otherwise, everything else was fine.

Beach dreams....I'll be on my honeymoon. I'd like to buy some lingurie and surprise. Not going to be much of a surprise if customs is pulling out all my stuff on the counter and showing everybody.

I don't know about going into Jamaica, but I know coming back you will be searched thoroughly. My parents used to go twice a year to visit my step-mother's family, and they were searched very thoroughly, dogs and all.

Barbara, there's always a risk of being searched at any airport so I wouldn't worry too much. I'd also say that customs agents are used to searching bags and won't throw your lingerie around, they've usually been pretty discreet any time I've been pulled out of line for bag search (I've never been to Jamaica though). We just got back from Jamaica Friday. If you have nothing to hide- you have zero to worry about.

A big thing is to make sure you have prescription medications in their original bottles and in your carry on. Otherwise, searches are random or if they detect something suspicious.

I don't recall being searched at all by Jamaican authorities after landing. Common sense applies here, I think. Don't take anything there that you wouldn't want to be caught with and make sure any prescriptions are in original bottles with your name on it. But that applies to all travel.
