Jamaica honeymoon safety

Shannon, on February 7, 2022 at 7:49 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 4
Congrats to All!
My husband and I are narrowing down where to honeymoon. When I told my mom this, she immediately told me to rule out Jamaica because of crimes against tourists in recent years.
Now that we are in final stages, we love one of the Sandals resorts in Jamaica. But I now have this fear about traveling there due to safety because of my mom and because of the US government's travel warning about safety in the country. Was hoping to find other couples that have traveled there in the past 6 months to shed some light on how safe you felt from start to finish. Struggling because husband really wants this resort but I'm a bit fearful! Thanks so much!

Ok, so I was just in Jamaica recently with my cousin who is a travel agent. It was a spectacular trip. She gets this question a lot and her answer is this:

Yes, there is crime in Jamaica, but as long as you stay at the resort, you are totally fine. Just use common sense. When you arrive at the airport, make sure you have transfer arrangements booked ahead of time and don’t stop for anyone who wants to talk to you. You will be fine.

Your MIL is being a bit dramatic. Most tourist-y countries have some level of crime, like pickpocketing, but you can avoid it. Like the above poster said, don't speak to strangers, and don't leave the resort alone. People were afraid to go to the Dominican Republic a couple years ago for the same reason. Unless you happen to be involved with local organized crime, Jamaica would be no more dangerous than anywhere else.

Jamaica is fine and no more dangerous than the US in many ways. When you are a tourist anywhere you are at risk. I agree staying close to the resort and just in general being safe across the board. Me girl and Montego Bay are lovely. I probably would avoid Kingston because like anywhere, where there is poverty crime may escalate. But in general you should be safe.
