Jamaica in September?

Kristen, on January 31, 2012 at 10:31 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 8

I really want to take our honeymoon right after the wedding. FH thinks we should wait til January because of hurricane season. We're set on either Secrets Wild Orchid or Secrets St. James in Jamaica. I don't want our vacation ruined of course... how risky is it to go to Jamaica in mid-September? Has anyone here gone during that time? What about vacation insurance, is that worth it? Thanks everyone!

I am in the same boat! Is your heart set on Jamaica? Islands like Curacao are outside of the hurricane belt, so you may have better luck. FH and I can't decide if we want to do the Carribean or Europe. Decisions!

Kristen....Secrets is a wonderful brand of resort. We did Silver Sands in Mexico. Apple Vacations has a wonderful "Cancel for any reason" insurance policy in which you would get all of your money back. Also, they offer a free honeymoon package. I would roll the dice and go, just buy that insurance. If you need an agent, I know an agent who has great contacts at that resort, Judy and Maria travels. They are located in PA but do a huge countrywide sale. Maria is awesome.

Oh great, thank you Carole! My boss is being sooo generous (we are a two person firm and are close) and offered to put the honeymoon on her Amex ahead of time so we can book early and then we'll pay her back over time. Otherwise, we wouldn't be taking a honeymoon til next year! I only mention that because I think her Amex deal for points (which is what she gets out of the deal) is that she has to go through Travelocity. But if that's not the case, I'll definitely contact that travel agent -- we are in PA too!

Kim, I think we are set on Jamaica. I don't know, something about it just clicks with us! We originally thought about Venice, but decided we wanted a lazy vacation for the honeymoon instead. Good luck deciding!

I would wait if your heart is set on Jamaica. It also depends on where you go in Jamaica and what you'd like to do once you're there. We went to Negril last year and it was AWESOME and probably one of the best trips we'd ever taken. I imagine we would have had a different experience going during the rainy season as it can affect conditions of some of the roads.

PS- We LOVED Curacao as well, but it definitely as a different vibe from Jamaica. They were both great places and I'd go back to bothSmiley smile!

We are getting married at Secrets St James & Wild Orchid on Sept 22, 2012. We did our research and talked to a bunch of travel agents and we think it is worth the risk. The way we see it is it is what we want and if we spend our whole life worrying about what the weather "might" do we would never go anywhere lol. We are just purchasing the insurance and hoping for the best!

Oh and we found an insurance that is very affordable and includes everything. It is called travelguard.com. Our travel agent recommended it for us. It bases rates off of your age and risk for them, but it also includes covering of medical expenses if you god forbid got hurt or sick while away, and covers you if the resort or airline goes bankrupt. It obviously also includes weather rescheduling and illness if you cannot go for a legit reason. For our guests going from 5-7 nights it was about $40-$75

Kristen D. I'm just seeing this now, thank you so much! That's very helpful information about the travel insurance.
