Jury Duty - YES this is wedding related!!

Jessica, on October 30, 2009 at 3:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 32

You know...things were going just a little too smooth for me. I have less than 30 days til my wedding and I really was stressing out. Things were getting done in a timely manner and everyone was getting along with one another. It was actually really stress-free. Until 30 minutes ago.

I got our mail and I have been summoned to jury duty for the District Court for Ohio - in Toledo - which is about 2 hours from where I live. I have to report to jury duty on November 16 - my wedding is the 28th!! AH! I'm freaking out! That's less than two weeks from my wedding! I was planning on taking the week of Thanksgiving off (the following week), but what if my jury duty extends into that?? What if there is court the Friday after Thanksgiving??? Do they have court on Saturdays?? I'm freaking out now.

Please pray that my jury duty gets cancelled!!

This might be bad....but I know some people who just throw those things away. Who can prove you ever got it in the mail?

My sister got jury duty the week of her wedding. she also worked at a middle school and was a key witness to a huge fight that happened at the school and that went to court the same week, along with haveing car issues and toyota not wanting to return her car untill 2 days before the wedding.

the last time i got jury duty, (the week after our honeymoon) i just threw it away... if it comes down to it, i would suggest you do the same. my boss and co workers have always thrown them away for years and nothing has happened to them yet...

Well in some states where you can make a one time request to change your jury duty date. There's certainly no harm in asking if that's a possibility in Ohio. Also there may actually be limits in how far you have to drive--do you have a former address in Toledo? I'm a little shocked if you'd actually be expected to drive two hours each way for a trial of any kind as a juror. I highly doubt there'd by Sat court sessions anywhere in the US and the day after Thanksgiving is very unlikely. Go to your states court website and it should give information or at least a phone number to ask about that date. If you explain to the attorneys (assuming you even got selected for that phase of the jury selection process) how distracted and bitter you would be they may decide they don't want you as a juror.

Ok... I've been to court various times. And I can say that one is that court isnt done on saturdays nor sundays. What you can do is call the office and ask them to extendit for a later time because right now you arein the process of getting married and wont be available till after. They aren't too mean about it. Or if thereis fees to pay go to the window of the court and deal with it before hand. Ask them if you can do the payments per month. That way it wont hurt your budget since you are planning to spend it on your wedding.

Wait a second.....is the jury duty in a county that you no longer live in? If you have moved from the county of the court that is summoning you all you do is check the box and return the card, and no jury duty! I've moved around a lot in the past 7 years and so far twice I've gotten jury duty for a county that I no longer lived in. It's the easiest out they give you! Since you said it 2 hours from where you live I'm thinking you don't live in that county and won't have to go

Jessica call the commissioner of juries for Ohio, there should be a phone number printed somewhere on the summons you received. explain your situation. see if you can get a postponement. No they usually do not have court on saturdays. good luck

Laura - it's a court higher than my home county. It's a district court for Ohio. As of right now, I'm going to try to contact someone and see if I can get out this date. I don't think that I can throw it out - I'd be too scared they'd haul my butt to jail! LOL

WAIT!!! please dont throw it away.... trust me you can try to escape it but the best thing you can do is try to deal with it now or after the wedding. But the legal way. Records in USA are too good. and can be found even if it was YEARS ago!! I hate that rule but its how it is. Also, I had court three hours away from whereI lived and I was still told to attend and drive there. Im from CA so it may be different there. ASK!! I was also told that even though no statements were sent to me I should have the moral knowledge to accept my responsabilities... I know they were harsh but its true to an extend. GOOD LUCK

Do NOT just throw it out!!! My future BIL decided not to call or show and got a fine! No one wants that! You might be able to get the date pushed back to a later time, or they may not need you at all. I had jury duty not that long ago, and was on call every Tuesday for a month and only had to actually show up one time. Same goes for my FH who had it a few months after me. GOOD LUCK!! I hope you can get out of it! =)

I was reading my jury duty paper...it says that most cases do not go more than 3-5 days (my luck it would go more, but I'm trying to be optimistic!). I can call the night before to see if it is still on. My FH said he got called to jury duty up in Toledo, he was on his way and just happened to call on his way up and it was cancelled. Fingers crossed for me and it is cancelled.

COOL!!! GOOD LUCK!! But then again your explanation and excuse can be a better one(wedding!!) Take advantage of it. Oh and why not research why you are being called. It may not be such abig deal and it can help you relax a bit. Sometimes you wont need to show up if you go to the window and agree to pay your fines

Jessica if you wanted like Southern was saying I know my state allows to change the date if you are going to be on vacation (which my Jury Duty was about a week before I left, and I just got my rescheduled for the week after I came back, I just had to go online and fill out when I would be gone and when I'd be back and they sent me a new Jury Duty card thingie with the new date.

DO NOT just throw it out!!! First of it its illegal, second you WILL get a large fine. The day you go to jury duty you most likely won't even be picked, but if you are the judge will ask you if you have any set plans that you can not miss in the next week or two. Tell them you are getting married....if they feel it is a good enough reason they will not select you and you won't have to serve. If they still want you to serve, but it extends through your wedding the alternate will take over. Don't worry you won't miss your wedding...but do the right thing and show up for trial.

Co-sign with dportloc. DO NOT throw it out. The judge will ask about special circumstances, and you getting married is one of them...the week I was to give birth to my son, FH had jury duty, I went into labor on the day he was to serve, when he called me on their break, I told him I was in labor, he told the court officer, who told the judge, and they let him leave, this is really nothing to stress over.
