You know...things were going just a little too smooth for me. I have less than 30 days til my wedding and I really was stressing out. Things were getting done in a timely manner and everyone was getting along with one another. It was actually really stress-free. Until 30 minutes ago. I got our mail...

You know...things were going just a little too smooth for me. I have less than 30 days til my wedding and I really was stressing out. Things were getting done in a timely manner and everyone was getting along with one another. It was actually really stress-free. Until 30 minutes ago.

I got our mail and I have been summoned to jury duty for the District Court for Ohio - in Toledo - which is about 2 hours from where I live. I have to report to jury duty on November 16 - my wedding is the 28th!! AH! I'm freaking out! That's less than two weeks from my wedding! I was planning on taking the week of Thanksgiving off (the following week), but what if my jury duty extends into that?? What if there is court the Friday after Thanksgiving??? Do they have court on Saturdays?? I'm freaking out now.

Please pray that my jury duty gets cancelled!!

When I went in for jury duty they took us into a room and made us watch a really dumb movie. Then they lined us up and took us into the actual court room. They questioned the people in the jury box and when they removed one, the next person went up, kept this up till they had the final jury. Point of this is that you might not even get selected to serve on the jury. And on of the questions they asked us was if we wanted to be there, if you say no they'll let you go home. But when I had it they actually settled the case during the lunch break so I didn't need to really do anything.

I've been called up for jury duty twice and never served. The first time I was excused because I was going away to college. The second time I apparently didn't fit their psychographics or whatever they were looking for in that case. Usually, they "call up" more people than they need... So, you may get lucky and they'll say that you don't have to be there. Definitely talk to them that day in person and I'm sure they'll see this as a special circumstance. Besides, you'll be completely distracted if you're on the case!

The first time I was called for jury duty - I sent the card back requesting a different date. I was given a date for almost a year later...called the night before, and I didnt have to show.

The second time I got it - I sent the card back again requesting a different date. I was given a date for the same month, the next year! I did show, but wasn't chosen for the jury because it had to deal with Doctors, and I work in medical offices aswell.

Your summons should have the option to check a box requesting a different date - if not, definitely call!

You guys are great! Thanks for all of your advice! Keep your fingers that when I call the night before, that my case gets cancelled and that I don't have to go...if I do have to go, keep your fingers crossed that I don't have to stay for long!

You have to go. and if you get pick well you can just say that you don't agree with what is being said and you will be passed on. Being picked for jury duty is not one persons choice. You might even get picked. Here in CA we have sometimes call ins to see if your needing to show up. You call after a set time and they give you block of numbers if your block is picked then you go if not you call again. Maybe you can just cross your fingers your not picked. If you fail to show you could have a warrent out for you. So becareful.

My hubby never gets selected when he gets called for jury duty....he just says that the person wouldn't be in court if he wasn't guilty and that's where he stands....he gets sent home!

You can always call and ask for a different date. Usually, if you have not done it before, they will accomodate you. If all else fails, tell them that Everyone's Guilty and should get life! That will get you out! haha

I agree with Crystal. Tell them that you're biased...you agree with the criminal justice system and you will always side with the officers. That's what my FMIL did (she was telling the truth...her husband is a cop and she really is biased!), and they sent her home.

    Update!

So I called the Jury Department this morning, I was asking a couple of questions about accomodations...and then I was like, "I don't know if you can tell me the answer to this or not, but can you tell me how long the average trial lasts. The reason I'm asking is because I'm getting married the next week and I need to plan in case I'm away." And the lady (who was EXTREMELY nice), was like, "Call the Friday before and I will check and see if we can excuse you then, if not, on Monday when you meet with the judge, make him aware of your situation immediately and we can try to excuse you."

I'm feeling a lot better than I was on Friday. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers...hopefully I won't have to make the 90 mile drive to Toledo November 16th!!

Ladies...keep your fingers, toes, arms - WHATEVER - crossed this morning! I call at 9AM to see if I can be excused from jury duty. Prayers are definitely needed and requested as I have already had a hell-ish morning already!

Hope it all turned out ok for you! I just got a summons last night for a date that is 3 days before my wedding! Needless to say, I freaked out a little. But I simply called them today and they easily said they'd reschedule!
