Just curious ...

Brandy, on September 25, 2018 at 12:31 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 20

Has anyone thought about / used hair extensions ? I'm curious to know if the extensions hold up and are worth using.

I am going to for our wedding day! If you hire a hair and makeup artist, they usually have great recommendations but I'm planning on going to Sally's and spending around $100. I want them more for thickness than for length.

I haven’t purchased them yet but definitely plan to about a month before my wedding. I have really fine/thin hair so I need the extensions to provide volume and texture to hold curl. I borrowed some for a friend’s wedding several years ago and I was amazed with how great they looked. The one suggestion that I keep hearing is to make sure you get real hair and not synthetic. I think I read somewhere that you can’t curl the synthetic (or maybe it’s that once you curl them you can’t restyle......either way I’ve read that real hair is best.)

My hairdresser/friend is suggesting that I get halo extensions. I’ve read that they hold up really well (although it sounds like most real hair extensions do) and that they are better for your hair since they don’t clip in and damage your hair/scalp. If anyone has experience with them let me know!!

I need it more for thickness than for length as well. I guess I'm just scared of them coming out at some point in the night. I've never used them so I'm not sure what to really expect.

My hair is thin too. Its really long but I want my hair to look full and flowy and of course want to be able to have the hair dresser style it with no problem. How do the halo extensions work if they don't clip on ?

If you get clip-ins, they won't come out unless perhaps you plan on doing some head-banging lol

What is your budget? They have quite a few kinds depending on what you want to spend. I'd try these for now if you can (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PFX74IS/?coliid=I1SI7E3N3AXNRE&colid=1VV15TIRDB6DS&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it) they are $9 extensions and have AMAZING reviews. They are clip in, so you could buy them and try them out for a day just to see how they feel! I just ordered them and can't wait to try them out since they are so popular. I think if a professional puts them in, I wouldn't worry about them coming out on your wedding day. But they are different kinds, so tape/glue in last longer like 6 weeks, sewn in are more expensive and last closer to 8 weeks, fusion ones last several months, and clip in are cheapest and last awhile but have to be taken out and put back in.

They have a thin/clear wire that supposedly blends into your scalp. My friend had me look at YouTube videos. I was worried at first because I have a small head and can’t even keep a headband on (they literally just slide right off of my head) but she swears this would stay on me. Thankfully I live in San Diego and there is a store where they have experts that will let you try things on and will help you pick out the right type of extensions based on your hair type and needs. I just don’t know anyone who has actually used something like this before.

Full head extensions ? I would definitely try piece by piece first because Idk how they feel once they are in place. It's worth a shot to buy some just to try out before going to buy the better ones for the wedding day. I have a lot of time but I like to plan way ahead and get things done in advance that I'm able to get done of course.

Hi Brandy! I've seen a lot of users on here use hair extensions for their wedding day! I used hair extensions once for a dance recital and they lasted the whole time! Are you looking for them to add length and thickness? We have a great article that goes into detail about the different types, I'll link it below!

Hi Kelly, I'm looking for thickness. But I don't want it to be extremely noticeable that I have them in on my big day I want them to look natural. My hair is just thin and very long. (I'm growing it for my wedding even though its not until 2020.) I know I have PLENTY of time before then but I want to know what my options are and have plenty of time to try different ones or get others opinions so I know what to look for.

This is me without extensions vs with them. They were clip ins and I got them for $60 on amazon. My stylist advised to not go to Sally’s, as they are overpriced, especially if you are just using them once. Just make sure you look for real hair and not synthetic.

I have tape in extensions, which are much more semi permanent than the other types people have mentioned. I LOVE them. They add both volume and length and I get a lot of wear out of them. Mine are 100% human hair and my stylist moves them up, every 7-9 weeks. I take them out fully, once a year, for a few weeks, just to give my head (not hair, ha) a break. Honestly, my hair is the healthiest it’s ever been, since I started getting these. Totally worth it.

Extension wearer riiiiight here!! I HATE my natural hair. Its baby fine, never ever ever grows, and is just hideous. I finally bit the bullet and splurged on tape in extensions back in early 2017. I will never ever ever ever go without my extensions. EVERRRR. I wear 22" tape ins purchased through Donna Bella. They have the BEST extensions for the very best price out there. (trust me on this) You will need probably 4 packs of hair, but 5 would give you lots of additional volume to work with. I wear 4 packs, but will wear 5 for my wedding for that extra oomf.

Now, be aware....extensions are NOT cheap. 4 packs of 22" extensions will run you $400. ($99 per pack) If you sign up as a new member, Donna Bella offers 5% off an order. (worth it!) Install is typically around $150. (depending on the stylist) If you buy cheap extensions, they will shed and they just wont last. If you take proper care of the extensions, the hair itself can last you up to a full year. You will have to have them re-installed every 6 weeks if you wish to wear them full time like I do. Extensions to me are worth every penny and then some!

It may be worth while to research a salon that offers extension installs and set up a consultation. They may have a ring of extension samples to help you color match your own hair. You can always have extensions colored darker, but never lighter. I do recommend calling around to salons, asking about an in person consult, and kinda going from there. Make sure you ask about their total cost for install, color (if needed), and the length of time to install extensions. (should only be 1.5-2 hrs to put in new hair without color)

Clip-ins are another alternative, but wearing your hair up can be a challenge. Donna Bella offers clip ins as well that are 100% human hair. They too can be colored, styled, etc just like your own hair. Another good company that offers 100% human hair clip-in extensions is Luxy Hair. I had their clip-ins before I turned to tape ins. One thing to keep in mind about clip ins...they can feel very heavy. I was wearing clip ins daily, and my scalp was really sore. That was ultimately why I switched to tape ins. Ill never regret doing so, either!

    Hope that helps!!

Here are my before and afters from the 1st time I had extensions installed:

I don't think I would want them in any longer than for just the wedding day. They can be taken out the next day or that night right ? I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions

Brandy...if you only plan on using the extensions for your wedding day, I would look into clip ins. Tape ins can get expensive, as you would still need multiple packs of hair and professional installation. While tapes ins are removable at any time, fresh tape may be painful to remove. (that stuff is STICKY!) I remove mine for re-install every 6 weeks and it hurts then! Stick to 100% human hair clip ins (I really do like Luxy Hair for clip ins) so that they can be washed and styled like your own hair. These can even be colored if needed. (darker, not lighter!) My Luxy Hair clip ins curl and holds curl incredibly well, too!

Thank you all for the feedback. I've decided I'm going to give them a shot and try them out and see how I like them and how they hold up in my hair before making a decision for my wedding day. I hate how thin my hair is. The length wont be a problem at all.
