Hello! So my fiancé proposed to me last week. I am so excited to start wedding planning. We’re trying to do our wedding as inexpensive as possible (due to us still being in college). Does anyone have any advice/ tips for ways to save big bucks when planning your big day?? I need all the advice I can...

Thank you so much! Setting a budget it so hard because everything seems so expensive and scary! I’m definitely going to sit down with my fiancé and go over priorities for budgeting🤍

One way to possibly save money is having the ceremony and reception at the same place. We are lucky enough to have a friend who is a chef. His gift to us is the catering. We just had to hire servers. Got any friends that can cook?
Congratulations and best wishes for you 💕

Congrats! Decide your 1) budget then 2) estimated guest list. That’ll help you choose a venue and event type. For example, if you have 20 guests you can probably treat your guests to a nice restaurant lunch or dinner at a restaurant after your ceremony. If you absolutely must have 100+ guests, I’d suggest a church/temple afternoon wedding followed by a simple cake & punch reception in the on-property hall.

    Congrats!

I saved a lot of money on my dress by going to a sample sale.

We also didn't do favors, photo booths, or any of those other kind of extras.

But, first things first, research, research, research!

You can't save money if you don't know what you want, what it costs in your area, and how many people you're going to have.

Everything is ridiculously expensive! Avoid using the word "wedding" any time you can - people jack the price just for weddings. It's scary, but it all works out in the end. Good luck!

Congratulations on your engagement! I would start off with a guest list, smaller guest list will give you more wiggle room to work with. Also write a list of what will be most important to you on your day. Youtube youtube youtube loads of savvy brides on there with great tips on how to save as much as you can while planning a wedding.

One random thing I noticed while wedding planning is if I added something to my cart and was subscribed to emails, but I didn’t purchase right away, most companies would email me a promo code within a day or two. The discounts ranged anywhere from 10%-30% off, and it worked at stores like David’s Bridal, M&Ms, etc. If you know you want to buy something and aren’t in any rush, I would give this a try! I ended up doing this for many things I knew I wanted and it helped us save some money. I also subscribed to emails for businesses I planned on ordering something from, and they sent promo codes or ran sales periodically. We even were able to get a good deal on our DJ this way!

We also prioritized where to put our money, and our budget was not evenly dispersed. We focused on venue and food because that was most important to us, and other things like cake, flowers, we are doing more DIY or low budget.

I haven’t read all the responses so apologies if I’m repeating anything.
    - Set a budget. Think about what you realistically want to spend and how much you can save/set aside as time passes.
    - Reduce waste. How can you reuse an item after the wedding (flower displays at home, I’m making prayer flags for the ceremony that will be curtains in our home). - Shop FB marketplace. Contact any friends who got married in recent years. I just scored a whole tub full of decor from a niece of a friend. - DIY, but still be mindful. Even dollar store flowers start to add up.
The above was mostly about decor. When it comes to vendors think about which are more important to you. Consider public parks as venue as they’re usually cheaper than businesses that are known as wedding venues. Consider just having a playlist and some speakers rather than hiring a DJ.
I’m having my wedding at 2 and reception until 6, so I’m only serving finger foods not a meal and I’m asking family and friends to bring the food.

I’m shocked at seeing so many fall 2020 weddings. How are you doing that with COVid and people needing to fly in etc? I don’t want to have to socially distance on my wedding day.
