Kay ruined my ring.... any ideas what to do? Or any experience

Elina, on November 20, 2020 at 7:36 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 34
Hello, last time I posted about my ring getting destroyed and I had to send it out to Kay for repair.... well after 2 months the ring finally came back and looks absolutely TACKY. They replaced the crown/prongs and it’s completely different and cheap looking. I seriously am sick to my stomach because it looks horrible and nothing like the original.... I’ve already had a hard time with Kay when I sent in the repair order as 2.5 months went by and no one wanted to tell me where my ring was..... the first picture is the before and the other one is what I got. What to do? Kay ruined my ring.... any ideas what to do? Or any experience 1

Well I’m sorry you had a terrible experience! I also can’t tell a difference, but could just be the angle of the photo. What exactly is different about the prongs?

It hasn't been 2.5 months since your original post - you posted October 10 and said it happened that day. I get being unhappy that it took so long, but it hasn't really been that long in the scheme of things - and a lot of places are having a hard time/taking longer because of COVID. I agree with PPs it looks exactly the same.

Not sure why it matters how long it even took, anyhow, the crown is extremely bulky and looks like it’s made out of cheap aluminum and extremely thick. Wether it’s covid 19 or not has nothing to do with the fact that the ring looks terrible and not even close to the original

The absolutely bulky and cheap looking replacement head. I tried to take a closer photo but my camera won’t focus 🤦‍♀️

It only matters because you made it matter. If you hadn't mentioned a timeline of 2/2.5 months, then I wouldn't have mentioned it at all, but you seem to be trying to make them look worse than they were - and COVID does affect time. They actually did quite well with the time considering all things happening right now.

Maybe you need to take another picture (same angle, etc. as the before picture) - because I am obviously not the only one who doesn't see a difference.

Oh I gotcha! Well regardless I know that’s frustrating. I hope you can speak with them about how unhappy you are!

Oh, I absolutely agree that Kay makes themselves look bad - they're overpriced and I find the *vast* majority of their jewelry ugly. I'm not being rude - I just don't think you need to exaggerate to make them look worse than they are. I have a 2 carat diamond tennis bracelet from them that came with one diamond that did not match (it was brown of all things) and they refused to replace it. Luckily, the darn thing fell out almost immediately after my first check, and they had to replace it.

Neither I nor anyone else could see the difference in your ring. There's no way to advise you as to what you *ought* to do unless the difference is visible. Take the picture again from the same angle as the original, so that we can see the difference - I'm not disagreeing that it's different, just saying it can't be seen. As a side note, since you have other concerns about the repair - is your diamond certified? If it is, you need to have the number checked. I work for a law office - but obviously you aren't in need of any kind of advice that would allow you to have.

That’s terrible about the diamond you had. WTH? Of course they would refuse to replace it, I’m so concerned about Kay because of all the negative reviews I’ve heard and read about them. That’s why I’m worried Kay ruined my ring.... any ideas what to do? Or any experience 3

about what they’re gonna say once I go in tomorrow. I’m honestly not trying to exaggerate or be a diva or anything but the ring honestly looks extremely funny. Especially in person when you look at it. I just tried to recreate the original photo as much as I could, so you can see how THICK and bulky the crown (or whatever you wanna call it is) it’s just too thick and sits way to close together and a little longer, doesn’t look as delicate as the original. Unfortunately, the diamond is not certified, it’s from Adriana Papell collection which didn’t come certified, I wouldn’t take it so far as to looking for legal advice over this, I just hope they can replace it with something similar as to the original.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I really can’t see the difference! Maybe it’s because of the different angles of the photos 🤷🏼‍♀️
Unfortunately, I have heard endless horror stories about Kay’s - from using shoddy materials, to jewelry falling apart and stones falling out. And scariest of all, there have been many people who have sent in their rings for repairs, were unsatisfied with the work so they took it to an independent jeweler, where they found out their stone had been replaced with a fake! At this point, if you are unhappy with the work, you basically have 3 options:
    1. Address it with Kay’s and insist they either redo the work or replace the ring altogether2. Take it to an independent jeweler to have it fixed properly (a local jeweler, not another jewelry store chain like Zales, Jarrods, etc.)3. Just live with it the way it is (truly, I cannot even tell the difference between the two pictures, and I doubt anyone else will either)
Whatever you choose to do, I would suggest getting the ring inspected and appraised by an independent jeweler to make sure the work is solid & the stone has not been replaced! Good luck! I hope it all works out!

Literally I heard all those stories too!!!!! So scary, and such a nasty thing to do for a multi million corporation! I was extremely reluctant taking it for repair to them, and when I didn’t hear back from them for weeks, and kept getting a run around and they never answered their phones, I got super worried, and now the ring comes back looking not very good. I’m just waiting for it to break now, because I heard that people’s ring fell apart within weeks after repair

They did *eventually* replace it - it just had to fall out first. Such a pain.

Now I see it. It does look different and slightly bulkier (and since it's a somewhat delicate ring to begin with, it stands out more). Probably, you don't/won't have a problem with the diamond, because the stores got caught - but a while back some people discovered that their diamonds were being replaced with lesser ones (part of the reason H got a certified diamond).

So (from someone who often gets their way when complaining). When you go talk to them do not exaggerate anything. Stick strictly with EXACTLY what happened (this is important, because you want to make sure they can't deny your request on the excuse that your story isn't adding up). Make sure you take this picture AND the picture of the original so they can see the difference. Make sure you know what you want. They may not be able to fix this setting, unfortunately. If that's the case, do you want a new setting, do you want a store credit, that kind of thing (and remember they may be a pain and not do anything for you, but seeing this, I think you have reason to complain). Lastly, I understand this is *extremely* emotional - so if you need to write things out to make sure you stay calm, then make sure you do so tonight/tomorrow morning before going in - you don't want to break down in tears while explaining it.

I see you just posted a new photo with the same angle as the original picture. I think I was looking at the wrong thing- I was focusing on the scroll work below the stone. Are you talking about the 4 prongs holding the stone in place?

That’s good advise thank you. I will definitely do that. I knew I wasn’t crazy. It just looks way off being thick like that while the rest of the ring is so tiny. They actually have the exact same ring in their store, which I will make them compare side by side

I can see somewhat of a difference now; ugh, it is not elegant and appears to make the diamond smaller, right? I would be highly disappointed and dissatisfied as well. My fiancé flew to the Middle East for my diamond and when he returned, he took it to Kay’s and they said they had to take it to the back to check it out and after two minutes, he told an employee to go get her immediately and she came back out and he said forget it and left. He said his stomach dropped as soon as she went behind closed doors. They’re known for shady business and I hope you get what you’re looking for / wanting. 🤍

That’s exactly right! That is so horrifying! I would never even consider going to Kay if I’d known all this stuff before!

They honestly better! But since they’re so shady I feel like they’re just gonna tell me to suck it up or refuse to do anything, or send it back for repair and it comes back looking even worse lol. The o my reason I picked out this ring in the first place was because it looks great from the side, now it doesn’t look great because of the crappy print job
