Keep the top tier for 1st anniversary?

Christy, on August 13, 2020 at 8:57 PM Posted in Planning 1 49
Do people still keep the top tier to eat on 1st anniversary? I know this used to be the thing to do but thinking it may not be anymore. What are your thoughts?

We kept ours. It's supposed to bring good luck.

I've heard of both keeping it or the bakery providing an anniversary cake as part of their package

We are. We decided to splurge and get a two tier for our minimony which is more than enough and even our cake coordinator suggested that couples often save the top tier. Even my FH liked that idea. There are ways to store it you can look up.

No. Frozen cake is inedible and picks up freezer tastes/smells no matter how many layers of foil and Rubbermaid bowls it's stored in. You also have a potential for food poisoning.

Take the top tier with you to your hotel room after the wedding. Many bakers offer a free or discounted freshly baked tier on the first anniversary.

I'll throw a penny in a well or something for good luck, I'm not eating soggy freezer burned cake, no ma'am. But really, none of my friends have frozen their top tier either.

We are getting married in September. We are going to do it. I think it is a cute idea.

We didn’t have a cake but most of my friends that kept theirs said it was disgusting. The thing nowadays seems to be bakeries making you a new top tier for your anniversary.

My baker is providing us a first anniversary cake as part of our contract. I’m beyond okay with not eating nasty year old cake.

Don’t do it!!! I’m a pastry chef who does wedding cakes and I can assure you, you don’t want a cake in a freezer for a year. It takes up space, and it won’t taste like it use to. I offer all my couples a discounted anniversary cake. Usually I do a replica of their wedding cake if they want. Instead save your top tier for you two to take home and enjoy after your wedding.

We didn’t save the whole top tier, just a couple pieces worth of it haha. It was actually surprisingly good for having been frozen for a year! And it was fun to eat it while watching our wedding video Smiley smile

I personally wouldn’t eat frozen cake. We aren’t planning on freezing it either. We thought it would be cool to save it and eat it like a week later because I’m greedy and I love cake.

We didn't. Our bakery offered us a replica for $28, which is what we did.

Do it! It’s a fun tradition. I’ve eaten cake we had in the freezer for a year from an over-the-top birthday cake for my fiancé, and it was great! It was stored it in Tupperware, so that probably works better than foil.
Whether you think it is worthwhile or not, a second cake became a thing so bakeries could increase profits from the wedding industry ...

So...the reason for this tradition was that couples typically had a baby shortly (nine months) after the wedding. Cakes were a luxury, so they’d save the top of the wedding cake to have at the baby’s christening. Since many couples no longer have babies so soon after the wedding, the tradition changed to saving it for an anniversary. It never had anything to do with luck, really. it went from being practical to being unnecessary. Whether or not you choose to do it is entirely up to you.
We aren’t having a cake, but if we were, I wouldn’t keep it.

Our baker made a special "top" tier for us, boxed up. We wrapped it up, and it's been taking up 25% of our freezer for just shy of a year.

Have to remember to take it out of the freezer next week!

We didn't have cake, but my brother and his wife saved their top tier. They found a whole tutorial online about how to wrap the cake so it wouldn't go "off." They said it was the nastiest thing - each had a bite and threw out the rest.
