Keeper of the Rings

Kacey, on October 24, 2020 at 1:44 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 9

So we don't feel comfortable having our nephews be ring bearers. I really want my niece to be a part of our big day but she'll be 8 so I feel like she's a little too old to be a flower girl, but too young to be a junior bridesmaid (I also know her mom might shoot down jr bridesmaid, her sister had asked her about it for her wedding this year and she said no). I was thinking about having her be the "keeper" of our rings until we exchange vows. Would it be weird to have her do it instead of one of the boys? I'm also not nearly as close with my nephews as I am with her! She's called my fiance Uncle since we started dating (4 years ago), which her mom and I thought was the cutest thing.

I think that's a really cute idea! I don't think it's weird. If you want her to hold onto the rings until it's time to exchange them, I say go for it!

I don't see a problem with it! Also 8years old isn't too old for a flower girl in my opinion. My niece was my flower girl for my minimony and will be for our big wedding as well and everyone thought she was just the cutest.

That's fine, but even if she or the boys have the title of ring bearer/keeper of the rings, you can still have an adult actually carry the rings.... I don't think too many couples give the real rings to a child.

I don't see a problem with it. But I will say, my husband's two nieces were our flower girls and one was eight at the time. She loved it. His nephew was our ring bearer and he was two at the time. We didn't trust him to carry the rings so the best man held onto him, but the ring bearer was still part of the ceremony and looked so adorable. All three are siblings so we couldn't include some without including the others. Are the nephews and your neice siblings? If they are, it might seem odd that you are including the one, but not the others.

The term ring bearer isn’t gender specific, I have no idea why that would be “weird.” Girls are capable of holding rings.

She could be a flower girl, and/or also carry the rings (or "fake" rings).

We had an 8-year-old flower girl, and no ring bearer; our best man held the rings.

Our officiant will be holding our real rings but the ring bearer (who will be 2) will carry the fake rings on a pillow. Personally, I just don’t feel comfortable or trusting a child to hold on to expensive rings.

You can have them as any role you want! You don't need to have both or even any! I think 8yrs old is a great age for a flower girl! My FH's siblings are our ring bearer (11) and flower girl (9) and it's perfect because they are old enough to walk down the aisle without losing it and they'll actually remember it lol!

Thank ou all for your input!! I ended up deciding to just ask her to be a flower girl, not doing a ring bearer (my niece and nephews are not siblings). Every wedding I've been to the flower girls are usually between 3 and 5 and when I've been looking at flower girl dresses they have mostly kids that look barely 5 modeling them! I haven't asked her yet because I'm waiting for a couple things to come in but I'm sure she'll be super excited! The last time she was a flower girl was for her mom's wedding and i ended up walking with her because she had just woken up from a nap and was not having it
