Keeping natural nails healthy. Secrets?

Our wedding is in December. My nails are gorgeous at the moment. YAY!! I'm taking biotin as a supplement. Allergic to some others that help. Does anyone know of something to keep the nails from tearing in the quick? They get so hard they just snap off! Something to keep them strong, yet flexible?...

Does anyone know of something to keep the nails from tearing in the quick? They get so hard they just snap off! Something to keep them strong, yet flexible? That's usually my problem. Maybe I should keep them healthy & short until about October? I welcome ANY advice. Thanks!! xo

My favorite supplement is Hair, Skin, and Nails gummies.

Thank you so much for your awesome tips!! Your before and after are amazing. 😍 What is a glass file? I use a heavy duty emery board. Do you think I need to keep my nails short until close to my wedding? What brand polish do you use? I use Julep and Butter London.

Hi Vicky! You are a darling!! The biotin is awesome! I'm also using an organic shampoo with biotin. It helps my nails, too. I'll look online about an organic supplement. Thanks sweetheart!! 💕

I find glass files shape and smooth edges better than emery boards. As you mentioned above, I also never cut mine. This is the one I'm currently using (I keep the little one in my purse): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0796VL7QP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GIKXCb0Y5BRQM

I have hundreds bottles of nail polish (doing all that research led to an addiction haha) so I use too many brands to list. I do like Butter London but find the Julep bottles hard to polish with. I buy a lot of indie polish from sites like https://polishpickup.com and Zoya is one of my favorite mainstream brands: https://www.zoya.com

I don't feel the need to keep mine short as long as they're filed and polished, but if your lifestyle leads to a higher chance that you'll have a bad, low break then keeping them short might be a good idea. Glass files also make it easier to shape them (square, round, almond, etc.) so if you haven't already I'd play around with different shapes and lengths between now and your big day to see what you like best.

Jennifer, thank you so much!! ❤ Your info is perfect. Can't wait to try the glass files. My nails do best square. I have a weak immune system and can only use polishes free of as many chemicals as possible. I know Essie is good, too. I'm going to check out Zoya!! I love Julep just because they are so fun. Big hug to you!! 💕

Okay, so now I am a few days out from removing the powder dip. I originally had wanted to get acrylic nails as a trial for the wedding day. My nails are generally pretty healthy and strong, but I always have that time where they're completely beautiful and then one breaks! So I didn't want to get a regular manicure for the wedding only to have a nail chip that day or something. The salon I went to said they didn't do acrylics anymore but would do the powder dip and they could add a tip or just use your natural nail entirely. I was told there were vitamins in the powder to help your nails. That's probably not true, haha. The dip itself was not all that different from acrylic nails in my opinion. I had it on for about 2 1/2 weeks but I decided I couldn't stand not having my natural nails any longer so I took it off. I followed instructions I found online to file the nails, soak in acetone for 10 to 15 minutes and then rub off powder. That did not happen, lol. I think I was soaking and re-soaking my nails for an hour and a half or more. Finally, I left the small remnants on and went to bed. The next day I filed off the rest. While it seemed my nails were growing well under the dip, some seemed to be weaker when I finally got it off. I think it's like anything you get at a salon, it's great if you keep it up. I will probably do it for the wedding again just to have peace of mind that I won't have a weird snaggle nail lol

I've always had the super soft nails that rip and don't grow out nicely. I started putting "Hard as Hoof" lotion on them before bed every night and it has made a huge difference! It sounds like you have the opposite problem but it has definitely improved my overall nail health so it might work for you. Good luck!

Oils! It doesn't even need to be anything fancy-- almond, hemp or olive oil do the job just as well as any professional oil. They'll help to prevent brittleness without weakening your nails. Also keeps your cuticles easy to tidy Smiley smile Massage it in when your nails are soft (e.g. when you're straight out of the shower). I also use a nail brush, it does a good job at keeping cuticles soft and nail ridges smooth.

It might be a good idea to keep your nails short- not ridiculously so, just enough that there's no risk of breakage, so it's easier to grow them all out to the same consistent length nearer to the date.

https://www.thebodyshop.com/en-us/makeup/hand-and-nail-care/almond-nail-and-cuticle-oil/p/p000960 This is a great one on a budget! (Supermarket own brand does just fine, but this feels a little more fancy!)

Thank you, Robert!! You have the most helpful information. 😊I have a glass bottle of oils somewhere, Omega 3's. Oh! I also have my Butter London cuticle oil. I hate to admit it, but I do get lazy. Ha! Ha! I've already had a break, not too bad. So keeping them short until about 6 weeks out.

This sounds lovely!! Thank you. My favourite oil is lavender. I need to just buy some. I can use it in so many ways and I don't think lavender is offensive to many. Again, thanks for the fabulous advice.

I found it at Walmart and sometimes you can find it for sale on Amazon! Never checked Tractor Supply but I hope you had good luck!

I have really nice nails! I get a lot of compliments on them even when I don't do anything to them. When they get too long they do break, and they have some ridges. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with them for my wedding. I don't wear nail polish because I'm a nurse and I really don't like the feel of it. I'm also afraid that I will pick it off of my nails. I am thinking about getting gel polish on my nails (not artificial tips) just so they look nice for the wedding day. Any other ideas?
