Kleinfeld Appt When Kleinfeld is out of Budget

I'm going up to NYC for a weekend trip for my parents to meet my fiancé's mom. This will be at the end of April. I want to go dress shopping with my mom that weekend. I watch Say Yes to the Dress and was wondering if it's worth it - for the experience - to go to Kleinfeld, even though my budget for my dress is under $1K, but they make it clear that dresses there start at $2K? Appointments need to be booked in advanced, so I booked a slot in case I decide to go for it anyway. What do you guys think, should I spend the time with my mom looking at dresses I can't afford or should we go somewhere else in the city where I might be able to afford the dresses I look at?

I thought about going there too. But after just trying on dresses once I realized that I can only look at dresses in my budget because I would be so upset if I went and fell in love with a dress $1000 over my budget! I was going to plan a girls trip to go, but I’ve decided it’s not worth it. It wouldn’t be as fun

I agree! While I might make a stop to snap a pic of me and my mom in front of the store #FindingmyowndresstosayYES I would not spend time looking at dresses that are out of my budget! it will just lead to heart break! and waste time in NY!

Why would you waste your time going there if you’re not going to buy one....spend your time at a place you can afford. That’s just silly in my opinion.

If the dresses aren't in your budget you can book an accessories appointment with them! I did buy my dress from Kleinfeld. While we were in the room waiting for someone to come take some additional measurements I chatted with my consultant. She said it was always very obvious if a bride was really looking to buy a dress or not. Though she specifically mentioned that a lot of people who aren't even engaged schedule appointments and that was frustrating.

The best part of the experience for me was working with their alterations department. They were amazing and so talented. We customized my dress and my seamstress was beyond helpful. She also really helped me with accessories.

Because I live in TX, my mom lives in GA, my fiance lives in NYC. I can't afford several flights a year. Likely going back to GA in the summer to visit parents again. Likely going to NYC this 1 time this year. I would like my first dress shopping trip to be with my mom regardless if I buy a dress or not. I would like to decide on a dress by end of may. Wedding is Jan 2020.

We went to a few other stores in New York. We went to Designer Loft, I am plus size and they didn't have a ton of options. The group next to me (not plus size) didn't seem to have much luck either. The other group suggested we go to Lovely Bride. That was a wonderful experience. The consultant was really helpful and had a lot of suggestions. We also visited RK bridal. At that point I had already bought a dress so I steered clear of the bridal section to avoid dress regret. We looked at bridesmaid dresses and I ended up returning later to buy my jewelry there. Have fun shopping in New York!

Their dresses definitely don't start at 2k. I went to Kleinfeld just for the experience and ended up finding a dress way under my budget that beat my number one dress from another store.

I didn't feel rushed at all. I felt like a star. My attendants were understanding, sweet, patient, and so willing to work with my pickiness. It was an amazing experience, that I'd recommend even if just for the experience.

They ask for 60% deposit of your dress. I tried on quite a few ballgowns, one of which was $1,100 and beautiful. They would def be willing to work with you and would probably even sell you a sample dress for a discount if you'd be down.

I recommend Kleinfeld for the experience, but you may just find your dress while you're there!

I wouldn't do it unless you're willing to scrounge the internet after and find the same dress gently used. Oftentimes it may be the case, but if you don't think you'll be heartbroken if you find something and can't stop thinking about it. Personally I wouldn't be able to deal but you know yourself!

It's quite possible that somebody pitches in as a gift. Also don't forget alterations that could be $150-$500.

Have you checked bhldn? They do have a couple locations here in NY but you have to make an appointment and choose certain ones to try on.

I absolutely loved my dress from there that I bought online and was $800.

I wouldn't. If you already know that the dresses they carry are out of budget. I was concerned about this with David's Bridal. They always tend to show you dresses "a little" above your budget. It might sound fun, but I feel like if it was me I would be devastated if I found a dress there that I loved and couldn't afford.

If it were me, I wouldn't. Sure, the experience might be great but you are setting yourself up for disappointment and possibly buyers remorse. What are you willing to cut if you spend $1000 extra or more on a dress?

I agree. My FMIL really, really wanted to go to Kleinfeld's because that is where she got her dress, but I told her I knew I couldn't afford it - my budget for my entire look (minus hair and makeup) is $700 (including the dress, veil, shoes, shapewear, hair accessory, jewelry, shipping, swatches, samples, and alterations). She tried to convince me to go by saying that we could just go to have fun, and that Kleinfeld's has dress sales (I don't know if this is true, but you could look into that possibility). It just seemed stressful and unpleasant to me, like I knew I wouldn't have fun. I thought about going to a different place in NYC, because I live in Brooklyn and FMIL, step mom, and my mom are right upstate.... But in the end I nixed that idea.

Instead here's what I did (FH referred to this event as "fantastic lady day") : I ordered wedding dress samples from an online vendor (Azazie), had the "moms" and my MOH/sister all pick dresses they liked, coordinated shipping times with Azazie's customer service, and had everything shipped to my mom's house in upstate NY. So on "fantastic lady day", a Saturday, the moms and MOH got to see me try on the dresses and "say yes to the dress", they all tried on their dresses, we drank wine and relaxed at home, played with my MOH/sister's baby girl (the flower girl), ate cake from a "to-go" sample cake tasting box from the bakery, and then went out to lunch and looked at wedding rings at the jewelry store. It was amazing, way more personal and comfortable, and I'm still on budget! Smiley smile

Your "say yes to the dress" moment does not have to be traditional!

I personally wouldn't do it. It is a waste of your and their time. The experience could be fun, but at the same time, I am sure the experience is just as wonderful at other salons. Many try to imitate it anyway.

If you have a firm budget, I would say don’t do it. You don’t want to fall in love with a dress that you can’t get.

Kleinfelds haz their sample room directly across the street. While you wont get the tv experience there, the dresses are still gorgeous. I got my dress from there. Its a smaller studio and when I went my mom and I wete the only ones so we had the place to ourself. You can try on the dresses and still have a wonderful experience and stay within budget.

Update: I went over a week ago. And it was a great experience like I thought it would be. I went with my mom and dad. My consultant was Morgan, and I'm not positive if I had seen her on the show before, but honestly that didn't matter. She was very nice and conscious of my budget and style. I tried on 3 dresses with her, nearly 4 but the 4th I just wasn't feeling it so I didn't even show it. She told me how to get to the sample shop across the street where every dress was in my budget. I tried on 3 dresses at the sample shop, but those just didn't click with me as much as the ones I tried in Kleinfeld. Morgan wrote down the designers for the dresses so that I could look into trying on more in Texas where I live. I'll go dress shopping locally in a couple weeks with 2 friends, but I'm very happy I got to have my mom and dad there for my first wedding dress shopping experience.

A couple extra things I learned about myself in terms of wedding dress shopping. I prefer working with a consultant - otherwise I'd get a bit overwhelmed looking at all the options and not knowing what style something is while hanging on the rack. I'm a wedding dress sample size - all the dresses I tried on, basically fit. I learned that a mermaid shape is not really my style, but fit and flare is. And finally, I learned the benefit of a train - I thought they were useless, but once I got a dress on, I realized "oh, this looks really nice. it'll be great in pictures."
