Knives

What are the best knives to put on a registry?

I've seen some knife sets have way too many knives that hardly get used, so is there a knife set with the bare necessities or would it be better to add knives and a block individually? What brands are the best? I'm hoping each knife would be under $100.

At places like Crate & Barrel you can build your knife set piece by piece, rather than buying a block of a bunch of knives. If you have a Crate & Barrel near you maybe try going to one of their registry events where they do demos of certain products and help explain pros/cons. We did that and it helped us pick which brand of kitchen knives we wanted and then we put three or four core knives on our registry to get us started.

I have Wusthof knives (about 6 in a block that has space for more) and love them. I definitely use 4 most often.

Henckels is also a great brand.

That sounds awesome! The closest one is about an hour away from us, but we may need to make the trek. I like to cook so they'll definitely be used.

Do you find you actually use all of the knives? I'm debating between a set of steak knives and 2 really good knives (like a chef's knife and one other) or an actualy set like this

This is what we were advised to register for when we were at bed bath and beyond. I think it’s important to have a full set of high quality steak knives for dinner. So register for as many steak knives as you are place settings. And then make sure you have all the basic prep knives, any high end set will include what you typically need.

Yup! But I use 4 most often... big one, bread knife, a tiny one & medium one most. Oh! And the scissors because it works on meat & food items really well.

I used Wirecutter to build my own set. They advise against buying full sets of knives for reasons that I forgot. Zola was convenient to add different knives to.

I got a self-sharpening Calphalon knife block and I love it!!! It's seriously amazing. if you don't actually want the block, maybe get one of those magnetic strips? Figure out what you have and what you might be able to use (bread knife, tomato knife, pairing knife, etc.) and you can individually list the knives you want. I've been very happy with my Calphalon knives though!
