KWR: Any teachers planning a wedding during school year (not on a break)?

Meaghan, on September 22, 2016 at 2:22 AM Posted in Planning 0 42

I've posted here a lot and WW has been helpful. I'm just curious on my above question. The backstory here is- for very specific reasons- We chose April 29 as our date. I'm a teacher and I usually have excellent attendance at school because I hate making sub plans and I want to keep up the progress with my kids. Well- I started with a new district this year and April 29 doesn't jive with spring break. In fact, the week leading up to the wedding is the week the kids come BACK from break. I have talked to my boss about taking a maximum of 10 days off. I'm given 10 days per year and that's how I want to spend it: getting married in GA (FH and I are in CA) and honeymooning in SC. I may shorten it to 8 days but...anyway. He's ok with it but I'm getting major blowback from my MOH (a teacher) and my co-workers. Any teachers gotten married during random times of the school year?

Why did you originally schedule it for April 29? Did you originally plan it to match up with spring break from your previous district?

I'm getting married MLK weekend. I'll be taking a total of 5 days off. I have the personal time so I'm not worried about it. My principal and staff are very understanding.

I live in Florida so summer wasn't an option and it would be very expensive to travel during Christmas, thanksgiving and spring break for guests so that's how I picked.

I'm new to my district too. My date is April 22. We have off the Monday before and Tuesday if we don't use two snow days. I'm going to take off that Friday and the following Monday. My Fiancé and I are just going to have our honeymoon in the summer.

I would never take 10 schools days off in row. That's 2 whole weeks of not being there! If I had to get married in the school year, I would take my honeymoon after the school year ended.

I can't even imagine writing subplans for 10 school days in a row. What a nightmare. How much instruction really goes on with a sub in the room?

@deb I live in FL and I'm getting married in the summer like millions of other brides down here. Why exactly wasn't it an option?

I've been with my district 5 years and am getting married over thanksgiving break. However, I'm taking 4 days off the week after. 3 personal days tues-thurs and a sick day on Monday (we're not allowed to use a personal day the day after turkey day break). I plan to tell my principal about the sick day up front. He's very understanding so I don't see it being an issue.

Honestly, writing sub plans suck, but it's your time off. I hate that we have a profession that's so looked down upon when we want to be real people and do something like get married at some time other than the summer!

I'm getting married October 8. October 7-10 is our fall break. So after the wedding, we have that Monday off. I'm taking the rest of that week off, so that's 4 personal days. I have a paraprofessional who knows the routine of the class so I believe they will be fine without me. I couldn't imagine taking 10 days though! I felt guilty about those 4.

FH gets 3 days off for the wedding. This is not part of his usual pto but we can't honeymoon right away so we are planning either winter or summer break.

Not a teacher but I am an SRO and my battles a little different. Its next to impossible for us to get time off during the school year. Literally like pulling teeth out of your own head. Thankfully for a wedding my Sgt broke the rule!! Ladies, Ive been doing this for 10 years and have seen the amount of work you do and all the crazy BS extra stuff. I seriously applaud that, and do not envy you your sub plans!

I'm taking 4 and a 1/2. We aren't taking our honeymoon until Thanksgiving. 10 days would be too much for me, it's up to you. But also your days should roll over, and plus if you take 10 then you will have no days left. When you get sick afterwards, you will lose money to take off. Plus it's going to be very difficult on your kids. Just thoughts to share, it's up to you.

As long as your wedding is on a weekend what is their issue? You picked a date, it is what it is, if they don't like it they can step down. I know that sounds harsh but they shouldn't be pushing back about a date like that. They will just need to plan ahead, like they would tell a student if the kids family went on a trip or had plans outside of school.

Mine was in the middle of the school year, but backed into Spring Break (I took off Thursday and Friday, married Saturday, and then had spring break).

Background: I teach high school (I don't know what you teach).

Clearly, do what you want. However, I would NEVER take 10 days off in a row willingly. It is hard on coworkers (who have to help the sub and take over tutorials, etc.), It's also not fair to the students because they're not really going to learn. And if I was a parent and knew my child's teacher was taking off for wedding/honeymoon, I'd try to get my kid switched into another classroom.

Now, I have taken off 8 days before - when my mother was dying/died. And coming back from that, from 8 days of email and sub work and such was difficult.

I can't imagine taking that much time off from school. Are you sure your principal is REALLY okay with it? That is two weeks of you being gone and leaving your kids with a sub...

ETA: How long have you been teaching there? If I was a new teacher (or even newish) I would not take off that long. It looks bad to admin. Take off the day before your wedding and the work day after your wedding and take the honeymoon after school is out.

I teach kindergarten and I am getting married November 5th. My FH was very set on the month. He said he does not want to be hot on our wedding day and it can't interfere with hunting season, lol. He also works offshore so that's how we set the date. I am taking a total of 4 days off from school. 2 days before the wedding, and another 2 days before thanksgiving break for our honeymoon. My principal is awesome and okay with everything. I hate being away from my students tho! This will be the most I have ever missed in a school year!

I'm getting married on Labor Day, so I will have two full days off before and will only need to take four days off after to complete the week. I think what is helping the most is getting as much done before November, so that I can spend the end of this semester, holidays, and beginning of next semester enjoying my life (ha!)! Luckily, we found a venue, date, and photographer within 6-weeks of getting engaged. My FH is nervous about taking days off, but, as I've told him many times, personal days are PERSONAL! He gets to use them how he feels best, and getting to rest after his wedding will be important.

    GOOD LUCK!

So in addition to pre-wedding stress, you'll also need to prepare 10 days of lesson plans? Yikes. Honestly that sounds insanely stressful. But I would be even more worried that your VIPs are expressing concern over the date and may not make it.

To answer some questions, I teach Kindergarten. Yes- the worst age to leave with a sub. I don't like it but it will be April/May so they'll have a firm routine by then. My former school was in Japan and my fiancé -who's in the Navy- was transferred to San Diego months into our engagement and after we had booked the date. I was hired in June for this district in CA- months after the venue and most vendors were booked. When I first sat down with my boss (he himself is a brand new principal and was brought in after I was hired), I explained all this, hat in hand. He said "Of course, you're getting married across the country...in GA. What an exciting time!" I also explained that with FH active duty, there's not a possibility to take time post-wedding over the summer or at a later time. Does anyone need a honeymoon? No. But my point stands that I get 10 days per year. With us being in CA and wedding in GA, I'd rather this not be a "back to work on Monday" situation. Ideally I think I'd like to work Mon, Tues, and maybe Wed of wedding week. That means it'd be 7-8 days off total. Boss suggested taking 10 days to be safe. It's easier to cancel a sub than to get one late. I need to be in GA Thursday because people will start flying in. Most of our guest list are OOT. It's not the VIP guests that are concerned. My MOH was just saying that in HER district, I'd get fired for taking...well...my days? I have taught for 12 years. I've never gotten married once. I am always at school- early in AM and late in the afternoon. Like most of you teachers. I didn't feel bad taking this time until I mentioned plans to MOH and then reading some of these comments. The situation isn't ideal. Of course I would have wanted break to match up. To the person who said they'd take their kid out of my class? In April? When I've (hopefully) already taught them how to read? That's a fine how-do-you-do. I also don't plan to discuss my personal life with my kids' parents. I will alert them of the absence at that time but I don't need to discuss it further with them. Boss even said "In the future, DON'T tell me you're going to be out or why. I don't need to know. Just get the sub". My final note is: I've been watching my co-workers. I have one taking 5 days before the start of Christmas break to go on a European cruise. Will she call in "sick" for that? Don't know. I'm being honest in my case, to my detriment. I have another one who took about 3 days surrounding Labor Day weekend (we are told not to do this) and has missed 2 Monday's so far. We've only been in school 5-6 weeks. Now off to work! Thanks teacher friends!
